The current Macbook Pro series are offered with matte screens. The current Pro desktop Macs require a separate monitor, as they always have, and most pros have never used the Apple monitors for high end graphic/photography use anyway. The iMacs have glossy screens, but they aren't considered "pro".
The app store "might" be the only source for apps *someday*?
Your switching to Windows7 argument seems pretty shaky. If you want to fine, but not for the reasons you've stated.

I disllked Apple’s design choices going into suseptible materials for its portable devices. Can you imagine a household television remote control made of glass?
I just bought a new TV for my parents, and it has a remote that uses a large glass touchscreen, brushed metal on the physical buttons, and a plastic backing.

It seems like the philosophical choice for some individuals is more about style versus substance, because users of Macs roam in the same unrestricted and perilous digital wilderness that Windows users do, except perhaps more stylishly. On the personal computing level there are very few examples of the walled-garden approach. However, Apple's most passionate core of users is still its professional base, so they must have some reason to believe that Apple's performance meets their standards.
Yes, but in the long term I do believe that Apple is moving to the "walled garden" approach. They want to be able to sell you everything through their ap store or itunes.

Well said: "Win7 makes it harder to justify the Mac any more". Apples laptops are overpriced and they work no longer than Laptops from other manufacturers like HP, Dell, Acer....
Don`t misunderstand me, I was a loyal Apple user for a very long time, but Apple did change. I still believe, that iPhones and iPads are more important to Apple than Macs.
In my personal experience, Apple's laptops do work for longer than comparable products from Dell, HP, and Acer. A few Windows laptop manufacturers build machines as good as the Mac; Lenovo and Panasonic's high-end ToughBooks spring to mind. However, I have been categorically unimpressed with the Dell and Acer laptops I have used and owned. My Macs have far greater longevity and durability, matched only by the Lenovo products I use for work.

Some fear of future Apple corporate/customer "control" is no good reason to switch. The fact that you can work just as fast on a MUCH more affordable Windows-based workstation with more hardware and software options is a GREAT reason to switch.
+1000. I'm not the fanboy type, so if you can offer me the same thing and maybe more, for half the price, I'm in.

In my opinion Apple is producing more and more glossy screen macs for the casual user than they used before. Some years ago macs were built for the demands of professionals (no stupid glossy glass screens, no glass trackpads, durability, etc..). Professional users are no longer welcome. Now in Lion - the next OSX coming march - , with the app store for OSX apps, there will be in the near future the app store the only way to install software. It is only a matter of time. Desktop OSX looks more and more like the iPAd OS (which is in my opinion a piece of crap).
With Apples rigid censorship we won`t be able to install whatever we want. Apple wants to take control over everything. Therefore I am leaving the mac OS after nearly 14 years and doing all my wedding photography in Windows 7, wich is a fantastic and very fast OS. Stable and more open then the Mac walled garden.

You have a right for your own opinion. Too bad your leaving to go to a PC "Piece of Crap) HAHA But seriously I can see where you are coming from. You may hate the iOS but in reality it is solid and a huge winner. Look at how many devices are out there with it on it. Billions! If it was that bad I am sure it would have failed by now. I have both iPads, every iPhone and 2 iPods and they all freaking rock. I have an android phone running the latest 2.3 and I have to say, iOS crushes it.
I am forced to use windows in my day job and windows sucks. I edit in Lightroom on both PC and Mac so I have some consistency and it is just horrid on a pc. I can not wait for my day to end to go home and work on a mac.
As for glossy screens being a reason to leave. That is just dumb. You can get a MBP with a matte screen. You can get a mac pro and use any display you want. You dont have the use an apple display. So that just leaves you with an iMac with a glossy only display. Well in that case, just get a different mac! I have an imac and love the glossy screen. Since using glossy, I feel my work has improved some in editing. Images just come out stunning.
You may need to rethink your decision before wasting that money on a pc.

I remember the Macintosh ad back in 1984, the theme was IBM was controlling. There were what looked like hypnotized people sitting in front of a screen being told the way it was.... The way Apple is going, if someone made that same commercial today, the face on the screen would be Steve Jobs.

You are apparently suffering from "iDisease" while suffering from this blind sighted disease your "iOpinion" is clouded by "Job`s" desire and very unreliable.....
Photoshop or Lightroom are just as fast and reliable on a good Win7 machine as any Mac.........actually you really can`t tell the difference. The days of Mac being the only reliable machine are thankfully gone.....

No kidding. I'm on 2011 Macbook Pro number three and four just to get two that work. The four other windows 7 laptops I have on the shelf behind me have all worked perfectly in a professional production environment since day one. I'm still not trusting the MBP's to take out on location.

Kind of reminds me of those posters over at the gear forum who send 3 or 4 L lenses back to the factory until they get one that is "perfect."

Unless you consider freedom from HARD ( power button reset required) random lockups, inability to wake from sleep, and failure to function with a Conon dslr and extended usb cable wanting "perfect"...well then I guess you and I have greatly different standards.
BTW, machine 4 now has as of this morning a very loud ticking hard drive which Apple care says replace ASAP.
My two cents after a month of Apple ownership is that their hardware is the least reliable I have ever encountered in all my decades in this business.

Sure, they could probably make the new iPhone compiler work on both, but why would they waste their time when as people have pointed out, they don't make PowerPC anymore.
I don't expect Visual Studios 2010 to work on WindowsME either.

For all the Apple "hate" out there, I wonder what the tech world would be like without them? Seems like they create something... iPod, iPhone, ipad and soon everyone else is throwing their wannabe copy or clone into the ring. I have used Apple computers for more than a decade now without a failure or serious glitch. If works for you, stick with it. If not, there are plenty of other choices out there.
If you have really had four Macs that haven't worked for you and your Windows systems have been so great, then why the heck are you still considering an Apple I am sure Apple would refund your money after such an ordeal as yours, just call customer service, explain the situation and get your money back.

Maybe you should learn to read before you post.
I've now had FOUR macbooks and of those TWO were defective/unuseable. Number THREE ( a usable one) has now had a hard drive failure. All in a month.
As to why an an Apple? Why not? All we ever hear is that they are the best thing since sliced bread. They just "work". So I decided to give them a try. What I got instead was "trying". I'm not alone. A quick chat with the Apple rep at a local BB store confirmed that they were getting massive numbers of returns for the 2011 macbook pros.
In addition to the cost of the computers there is the software and accessories that in addition to the $5000 cash I plunked down for hardware. Returning the hardware is not an end all. Beside I bought something and I expect it to work, considering the premium price that was paid. And my wife wanted Garage Band.
Its pretty clear Apple has failed somewhere along the line with the 2011 MBP's (not to mention the poor usb performance of the 2010 MBP). Your decade of experience is pretty much meaningless. Just like the photography business you (or Apple in this case) get judged on the basis of the last project, not history.
I made a pretty big financial commitment to go the Mac route. I paid a premium too boot. TO say I'm less than thrilled at the quality of the product produced by Apple is an understatement. And again I'm not alone. The problems on this class of machine are well documented. When they machines work, I'm not unhappy with them. They are fast and OSX is at least the equal of W7, even though it is a bit more labor intensive in some respects. Less in others. I can live with it. MY wife seems to like it so that's a plus.

I would also like to point out that with the recent 3-5 years the demand for macs has climbed drastically. With such they have went through several model changes and tons of new R&D..
As with any new item there are going to be a few bugs... but look at the long run products of the Mac's. The pro for example is virtually a flawless system. I do not know anyone who has got one of these and had issues with it. (I haven't read everything in this posting.) The iMac's are seemingly solid and stable now. The laptops I think with the most recent generation they are rock solid. You have to understand also that Mac went to the new more user friendly Pentium processors to answer the call of its consumers to both lower price and to make it more easily upgradable. It is hard to please both professionals and average consumers. Which is why their is still the high end mac pros and then the mini macs.
As for PC's you have to remember with your hardware you are no longer comparing mac to pc you are comparing mac hardware to pc hardware whether that is HP or Gateway or Dell the internals are all different. Mac's run hot, they are extremely compact so this happen... this is why you should keep your monitor / system sleep modes configured to take over as often as possible and not just let the screen saver burn all day. (You should be doing this n-e-way to conserve energy.)
