Ernie, my view of lenses has been skewed ever since I started using 500 f/4 and 400 f/2.8 handheld on a more regular basis.

Here are more 100-400 shots of fall bokeh with small birds trying to hide.

Fall colours in birds.
Snow buntings in their winter plumage have migrated to southern Ontario from their breeding range way up north.

100-400 on 1DMkIIN, major enlargement crops.

Thank you, Ashley, in that shot the lens was stopped down to f/4.
The reason you don't see my shots from before is that I usually delete all of my images after they have been posted for 1-2 days, as a sort of copyright protection.
