p.3 #1 · Re-discovering the D70s

Very nice.

In the spirit of things I went to the beach on Sunday and took the D70 and 24-120VR (Original).

Slug - great beach shot! Was there some fill flash used?

Here is an old post from dpreview. I use these settings now and am very pleased with what I'm getting...

Yes, fill flash was used. (Possibly too much) I used the onboard speedlight. I have an SB-800 but wouldn't cart that with me to the beach unless I was getting paid!

Speedlight performance with Nikon is one reason alone to not stray from the brand. In terms of shot after shot of reliable exposure using their speedlights/CLS it never ceases to amaze me.

You only need to come away with a few good shots from a day out to put a smile on your face. My kids ham it up too.

I will have a go at your settings too. Looks interesting as yes, sometimes the JPEGs from a D70 are way too blue. I generally always shoot RAW and correct in NX2.

When Nikon moves past 12mp for their FX range I want for nothing more them to have an sRaw option for that very reason. I don't need 16+mp for newspaper work and I like shooting raw for highlight recovery and various other benefits.

Then again, as I write, and think about this, perhaps an FX body shooting Auto FP at a high ISO, you might get enough power. Hmmm....something to think about.

Here's something to feed your thoughts. This was at "Arabian Nights," an entertainment show based on horses in Orlando. The arena is rather large, but I was able to get balance some fill flash and some background lighting by setting the D3s to 1/500, f/2.8, and ISO12800 with a single on-camera SB-900 at a fixed 1/8 power output.

In test shots before the performance started, I could take a photo of the spectators on the other side of the arena, see the flash light them, and see the red-eye in their eyes from my flash. Unbelievable. And of course, this image also tells you something about the flare resistance of the 70-200 VR2.

I'm with Jammy... I wouldn't want to buy a specifically low-res body, but I'd love to have a binning function that allows my 24MP camera to combine the data from four pixels to act like a 6MP camera with incredible light sensitivity. That would be a dream come true, and it shouldn't be very difficult to do... right?

I think there are some Point and Shoots that have this ability but I am thinking it’s because they were CCD rather than CMOS sensors. (Might be easier to do)

Rodolfo, thanks for posting your High ISO-Fill Flash image and, yeah, that's what I'm talking about!

Yeah, it's a little scary just how sensitive 12800 is... I had trouble believing it when I saw that 1/8 power was the proper flash power setting. I've ended up referring to the 3201-12800 ISO range as VHI (Very High ISO), and to 12801-102400 as UHI (Ultra High ISO). Calling 12800 "high ISO" just doesn't seem fair.

By the way, I found something funny. Either Lightroom or FM uses a 16-bit data container for ISO... when uploaded with "Show EXIF" checked, my ISO 102400 shots show up as "ISO 65535".

Heres a lucky shot with the D70 this week.

I had to manual focus as it was just too dark for D70 to cope.

Bump!

Happy New Year. I was fortunate to have a good view, if not the best view, in Sydney for the New Years eve celebration.

p.3 #14 · Re-discovering the D70s

My first DSLR was a D70. I still have it and it is an amazing camera. I used to shoot motorcycle track day photography with it and I would shoot up to 3500 shots per day with it. That was about 20 events a year for 2 years. Nikon told me I was crazy and said that body wasn't built for that much abuse. But it just kept on cranking out beautiful, sharp images. By comparison, when I upgraded to a D200, I had a much higher image rejection rate and battery life was horrible. I still have the D70 and don't intend to ever sell it. I am really glad to see this thread praising this great camera.

I don't intend to sell mine either. They're not worth much on the buy-sell market, so there's no reason to basically give away a capable camera that I'm not afraid to knock around with. Plus, it's a great camera for throwing in a motorcycle saddlebag.

I sold mine to buy a D200 (what a disappointment), got a D90 sold it before the D7K, got & returned the D7K..

Now I'm making offers on D70S's while waiting for the D400. Go figure...

Always told myself I should have bought one of these as a backup and for the 1/500th sync speed. That alone would have helped me so much with all the bmx ive shot over the years.

Cheers Passthegravy!

This is about the limit for the D70. You can see some banding just creeping in near the top. I had to do a bit of work in CNX to make this shot look acceptable.

I will post some others later.
