p.1 #1 · Canon 24-70 f/2.8 vs Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF
I tried to do a search but didn't find a link to my question. Is the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 really that much better than the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX Aspherical DG DF? Price differance is crazy! Thanks

I've completely given up hope on all third party lenses except for the Tamron 28-75 and the Tokina 28-80. But even that, when I'm done with my summer vacation, I'm ordering my first L, the 24-70 from B&H or however so I'm going to get it and forget saving money once and for all.

I've recently read a review in the French "Chasseur d'Images" magazine and I think I finally understand why I was getting some terribly soft images from my Sigma 24-70. They're now using this new software based test method that analyses the final image that comes out of the camera so it takes into account not only the lens but how the whole system works together.
The text results have convinced me to keep my Sigma 24-70... for now anyway. With a 10D/300D and from f5.6 on, photos with with this lens are in the "very good" range (centre and corners), roughly the same as the Canon 24-70L. At 2.8 and 4, it's another story.
Whereas traditional lens test methods showed a slight to moderate decrease in quality, the tests methods now used in Chasseur d'Images (which actually test how camera and lenses interact) show a phenomenal drop in quality when you open up the lens. Center sharpness is o.k. at f/2.8 but the corner shapness is so low at the lens extremes that they don't even show a bar on their graph to indicate some mesure of sharpness (nada, nothing!!). It's a little better at f/4 but only gets really good from f/5.6 on. I now understand the terribly soft images I was getting from my Sigma/10D combination.
It seems that the digital image sensor is much more sensitive than film to the drop in sharpness as you open up the lens.
Of course, the Canon "L"s do better in these tests. Less chromatic aberration and more usable opened up even in the corners. It all depends on your budget I guess. If you can afford it, go for the L, if not, use the Sigma or Tamron for a while and, down the road, get an "L" when you can afford it.

I cant speak for the sigma but i do have the Canon lens and it never lets me down . the price is steep , but i don't regret this purchase at all, since it is my most used focal length. I should also include the build quality is very high as well.

I owned a Sigma 24-70 and felt that my copy at least was very solid image qualitywise and maybe better than a friends Canon 28-70 that I have compared it to. The thing about the Sigma that made me upset was the AF speed/noise (sounded like a chipmunk on steroids) and the stiffness of the zoom ring. I have never used the Canon 24-70 as I do not like this range much at all, not long enough or wide enough for most of my needs (but it would be a sweet under the hoop basketball lens), so I sold the Sigma and bought a 16-35 and also use my 70-200 the rest of the time. I have had good luck with the image quality of Sigma lenses, but the build and AF are not up to par, which is why the only Sigma lens I own is a 50mm macro since it is so small and offers 1:1 macro capibilities.

Comparing these third party wannabe's with L glass is like trying to compare Ice Milk to Hagan-Dazs, there both in the freezer section but that's about it!

I used to have Sigma 24-70 with my D30. Well, for the money it is a good lens. In comparison to canon L of the same range... There is nothing to compare.
Now, I can imagine that the Sigma is worse on 6, 8, and 11MP bodies.

I bought the sigma 24-70 F2.8 in July. It is an ok lens but the build quality lacks quite a bit in my opinion, which, I can say with some authority since I have seen its innards when it broke in half.
The portion right behind the zoom ring (near the body) holds the actual metal mount to the body. The metal mount is held by 4 tiny screws that go into plastic. That ring holds the rest of the lens using 4 very small screws that go into plastic as well.
If you drop the lens, like I did, it is very easy to rip the screws out of the lens.
I know dropping a lens is not a good idea and I know I am at fault for it, I also know the lens was $329 and you get what you pay for.
I just sent it back yesturday to be repaired but I think what I will end up doing is getting the Canon lens instead.

My sigma 24-70 f/2.8 is dead on sharp. I must of gotten a good one? Matter of fact ALL my Sigma EX lenses are dead on sharp... Non EX is a different story.
