Is an extra $200 really significant for a product of this price? I can't see it being myself.
In my case $1,000 was on the expensive side already for a second (or third) camera. Them raising the price just pushed it over the edge for me, I would have preferred to see this around $800, or you know, free
I'd much rather spend $200 than $400. Or $1000 than $1200.
If I look at this realistically, can I get the same experience with any other camera and spend less than $1200? I think that answer is no.
I spent more than this on a Leica M6 and pretty much left the 35/2 glued on. It's not a replacement for a dSLR, but that type of camera serves a very useful purpose for me. I'm pretty positive I'll get better results at 1600 from any modern APS-C sensor than I got from Neopan 1600 film.
That said, $1200 is pushing the line for me. $1000 is a no brainer. I have to stop and think about $1200. Not sure what my decision would be at $1400. I've waited this long for a digital equivalent to either the M6 or Nikon 35Ti I used to use. Within another year or two, there will be more options. $1000 is an easy answer for me. At $1200, I'm starting to think about dealing with the EVF on a Pen or GF. At least with the PEN, I get image stabilization built-in. For $790, I can get a Pen, 17/2.8 pancake, and optical viewfinder.
I preordered, though just to hold a spot for now. I think we will see the price drop around month 3 to $1000 after fuji has had the most they can from early adopters. I'm very curious to see how the iq is vs the x1.. and since leica is dragging ass on the x1 firmware update.. I may just sell it on now and use the gf1 til the fuji arrives... or just keep the gf1 and lug my 7d more.
The x1 is getting harder to justify for any new buyers. At least we who have already enjoyed using it for 6-12 months.. well 6-9 months.. still it depreciated quickly
Hmm, $1000 would have been nearly a no-brainer for me too, but at $1200 I start to think about other options. That is the price of another ZF.2 lens for me...

Let those early adopters take the hit write blog posts and "reviews." These products are never the release price for long - Canon and Nikon cameras often drop up to 20% (or more) over the course of their product cycle.
Everyone wants things for as low a price as possible, but there are tradeoffs to that. The more Fuji makes, the more they can put into R&D.
I sometimes wonder if people are completely unaware as to what the consequences and tradeoffs are for getting things cheaply. You don't want to pay a lot more than you need to, but that profit comes back to us in the form of more products and in some cases, a company's continued existence.
I think there is no doubt the higher price is a result of all the interest in the camera.
Good for them. I must admit I would love to get one of these in my bag for a day and give it a go. And I have a friend who is looking for a camera and I think she might really like this Fuji X100.
She walks alot and wants some awsome IQ with manual contoll.
Personally I would really like to have a FX sensor and a wide angle lens. Or a FX sensor and fast 50 1.2 ASPH.
I really hope that this camera sells like hot cakes and Fuji makes another version with FX sensor.
with respect, let's be careful to make a delineation - complaining about a company's profit margins on a particular product, and saying that a product with such-and-such features has no (or more realistically, 'not enough') value to him/her above a certain price point (regardless of the company's profit margins), are two different things.
