Extension tubes got me going in the distant past. I've no idea whether it will happen once again. It is nice to make a contribution to the conversation, both with words and with photos.

Curtis, since you're on Flickr - check out the Macro Mondays group - might be a fun thing to get involved in and use those extension tubes. similar to the FM weekly assignments, but with distinct Macro focus and you can only submit one per week matching the theme.

https://www.flickr.com/groups/macromonday/

theme for this week is "“Into the Woods" with one restriction: NO DANDELIONS!

There are some other rules - max subject size 3" etc, all covered in the group discussion.

Looks like a lot of fun. I need to get my tubes onto that 180mm f/2.8 ED to see what it can do should it go hiking with me.

Such constraint Buddy. My guess is that as a recently minted father, you don't have TIME to wax eloquently on any subject, except perhaps potty training...

I'll add a coda to your comment, however, because I'm sitting alone in my cottage with nothing ahead of me for the day except putting away laundry... I'd rather chat.

As cars have gotten bigger and much more sophisticated in features offered, so have homes. I continue to be very happy in my 400 square foot cottage for the past 26 years but it seems most folks want more house. I saw a report

There is that as well. Most of the time I can take for myself is in the morning hours, before the sun and Anouk rise, and in the evening hours, after Anouk and the sun both decided the day has had it's best time.

In both occasions that also means no lights, dimmed notebook display and not too much noise as Anouk and Kristina are light sleepers and both need whatever sleep they can get at the moment (Kristina watches after Anouk during the night, when she wakes up).

We have some 900 sq ft of space at our disposal, but with 2 adults, a child, 2 dogs and whatever else we keep in our zoo (2 snakes, 2 tarantulas, 5 degus, 8 rainbowfish, 8 hermite crabs and some 30 crabs of the genus Geosesarma plus all supplies needed to feed the bunch and keep the enclosures clean/refresh substrates etc.) that is not a lot of space.

The other 1500 sq ft of the farmhouse are occupied by the landlord and his wife. We have a fairly good understanding and as such, we chat a lot, which invariably means that I get to learn a bit about farming as well. They keep cows and horses, and even though this winter most everything went well, the oldest lady in the herd did not make it, and after combined efforts died at an approximate age of 31 years. 5 calfs were born during the winter, which was also quite exciting, but the last one, born just last week, didn't survive. The other extreme is that one of our hermite crabs resurfaced yesterday after 4 months of absence (it burrowed in to moult and remained subterranean for the past 4 months)

Lot of talk about the various walks and ways of life and death recently on our little farm, so yesterday we went out (to the DIY store) and got supplies to make a shelf to put some flowerpots on. Puts things in perspective again

True to form a hedgehog turned up at the bird feeder scavenging in the undergrowth for his/her supper after the sun went down.
I had prepared my infrared D80 with the 85mm H f/1.8 and an old Vivitar flash that I have converted to emit near infrared. The flash emits a hardly noticeable dull red light therefore it did not disturb the animal. The problem for me was that I was shooting with a relatively narrow field of view in the dark on a fully manual setup from ~1.5m away. I managed 10 or so shots before my physical presence and camera antics scared him/her away.

Here is a file from the camera using a custom WB set to get rid of the redness from the filter.
The second picture is a simple B&W conversion. Both have been sharpened in LR.

The clay plant pot riser/foot is about 3 inches wide but he/she is too big to hide behind it.

The 85mm H 1.8 is a great IR performer.

Yes a new lens/some new gear every now and then always brings back some of that inspiration. But also rediscovering an old lens or camera can be very inspiring as well. Variation of gear and scene absolutely gives some energy back, and of course som inspiring company

Talking about spring and extension tubes, I need to take mine ones out and shoot some..

Thanks for the well wishes! Tomorrow I'll see how it has worked out.

Over the years the topic of waning inspiration has come up from time to time. I know for myself that it is often the addition of a new lens that stirs the juices. That worked quite well for me largely because I bought so MANY lenses... not something that makes sense for everyone. Without adding to my kit, it is generally a change in my setting that can get me inspired again. When I've traveled to Europe, which has happened twice since I started this thread, I took a great many photos. When Rinie came for visits on two occasions,

You're right on that count... old friends can be a pleasure when we feel the inspiration to pick them up, as I did yesterday with the 180 f/2.8 AI-s and as I did this afternoon with the 20 f/.8 AI-s. You won't see what I shot today, however, because it was a rather mundane task.

My grandmother had sixteen grandchildren. In 1949 when I was eight years old she had a stroke that left her with a limp left arm/hand that were little more than a dead weight. I grew up watching her slowly limp across the kitchen as she went to the drawer where she kept cinnamon rolls that were always in good supply when I visited from the city. When I was older I learned that AFTER that stroke, my grandmother stitched together patchwork quilts for each grandchild!!!! That's sixteen quilts sewn together with one hand lying immobile on top of the fabric while fingers of the other hand did the stitching.

As i write this I realize I have to upload photos to share. These were taken with the 20mm AI-s lens.

Since I don't have children of my own, I'm in the process of deciding to whom I should give this quilt. It has resided on a closet shelf for 25 years and really deserves a new home. Sadly, the colors don't fit in my home. This is definitely the time having a second bedroom would be nice... but no luck. I don't even have ONE bedroom.

(For the most discerning viewers you will likely make out camera bags to the left of the bed... so little room, so much camera gear... )

Curtis.

love the umbrella shot. The scale is hard to tell. Could be an umbrella, could be the structure of an observation tower.

Seeing the outstanding work done with the 180/2.8 ED and extension tubes by various members, I decided to give it a try. So far, I haven’t found a successful way to hold the lens steady enough for macro work with any consistency. Most shots have been rather blurred. I seem to get better results with the much smaller and lighter 135/3.5. It’s clearly motion blur; fault lies with the user, not the lens. Here are 3 attempts with the 180 on the Df.

Our bed is also flanked by camera bags, for practical reasons though. We get up, get dressed (and those camera bags are almost part of that) and then decide where we will go to enjoy the outdoors.

Thank you for sharing such an amazing story about the determination and skill of an amazing person Curtis. My mother knits, and she made quite a lot of clothes for Anouk, but the item we use most of all is a blanket she knitted. We take that everywhere, because it's just such a practical item. Nowadays, many people consider items not bought in a specialized store to be of lesser quality. Often, these people consider self-made items of lesser quality (or they just cost less, so there is less of an investment involved to attract the envy of others) but these things are never a consideration for us. We really appreciate the effort my mother makes in preparing these clothes, and we discovered that these items, and the materials used to create them, are often far superior to that which can be bought in a store. But most of all, they are a labour of love, and that can never be bought.

Loving the speed right now, I just had a very pleasant 4 pages of really nice images to browse through with my mug of Yorkshire tea.

I've been doing major works in the garden, but have found time for a couple of stacks, waiting for the full moon to go away so I can try some more astrophotography now that I have my Polemaster and my tracking mount.

For those who are interested in shooting Nikon manual lenses with Fuji mount - I'm selling a Metabones Nikon to Fuji speedbooster ultra on the B&S forum. Also have a Voigtlander 40 2 Nikon mount (SLII rubber ring version) on the B&S forum as well.

I know some people on here are familiar with this lens so was hoping to get some info. There seems to be 3 areas that can rotate. I think I know all but 1 of them.

1. There is the top one which changes aperture
2. The one below the aperture

Dave - sorry for the late response (catching up on the thread after being away for a couple weeks). Nice looking kit there.

If you want, I can send you a PDF scan of my instruction manual of that lens. Just PM me an e-mail address you want me to send it to.

Thanks for sharing Curtis. That is an amazing quilt. My mother-in-law also made quilts and did it for her grandchildren too. My wife does some quilting and will probably keep the craft alive once my son is out of college and fully on his own. Right now she is still 100% mom

The county I live in has a quilting "party" every year since 1931. I posted a link to a video about it below for those interested.
