We visited the tower which offers dramatic views of the surrounding neighborhood, both inside and beyond the park. Again with the 55 f/1.2 S.C. AI.

And here are two different treatments of the same image, the second converted with Silver Efex Pro 2. I opted for the red filter to make the exit signs pop.

They do a lovely job of mounting exhibits. This turned out quite well.

Thanks, Colin. I wanted to do more comparison shots with different lenses, but the light sprinkles turned into another downpour. We have had the most rainy days November through April on record.

Thanks Ken. I haven't gone too far, though since I haven't been shooting much I don't show up often with anything to share, at least when it comes to posting photos. Now that weather is better I'll likely get out again and start shooting.

I love your recent offerings with the extension tube. I'm surprised you're shooting at such a wide aperture. I find tubes narrow the focal plane so much that I have to stop down to get decent focus. Of course, the Pk-12 is pretty narrow. I really owe it to myself to put a set of tubes in my camera bag, perhaps with the 180 f/2.8 AI-s or one of the 135mm lenses in the cabinet behind me. I do love shooting with tubes...

Now to bed. Be well my friend.

Just got a lens on the bay that I have had my eyes on for awhile. The 28mm 3.5 PC lens. I found this deal in the middle of the night and now I just need to hope it is for real. Always scary buying from a new member but the usual red flags aren't there. if it is for real it is a nice deal.

My Beater "UGLY" 180mm f/2.8 ED arrived from KEH, and as usual, the lens is in far better shape than the auction suggested. Glass near perfect in front, not a mark in back (where it matters), and mechanically all good. A bit tight on the aperture ring, but focus is real smooth and has the right resistance. It really is just the paint on the lens shade and the rear body that has taken a beating over time. Good deal at $159.

First test images show significant red fringing on high contrast edges that are just out of focus at f/2.8 and even at f/4.0 - is that normal? I'll try to get that into photoshop and post some examples later when I find some time. Otherwise, first impression is pretty positive. Heavy bugger... I'll give it a proper workout this weekend at the first Cars and Coffee of the season.

Definitely looks like a great deal. I would not worry about new sellers - those are sometimes the only chance to get a good deal, because they will start things at a bidding starting price and then nobody bids, as most of ebay in the camera area has turned into a buy-it-now store where deals are difficult to find.

I have half a dozen PayPal claims going on right now. The other bits are just not showing up. Really frustrating.

I believe I have observed high contrast areas to be tough for this lens wide open but that is not to say LR cant handle it. Good find! I drove to tampa from miami to pick mine up in spring of 2014 when I used to live there. I believe I paid $175 for a well used one.

I've been laid up for a few days with a rash that has me in its grip... not fun contending with a rash. It did give me time, however, to go back to process some images taken over the last couple of months. That means, of course, that I have something to contribute to the thread which seems at the moment to be moving, though at a more leisurely pace. I love what I'm seeing from everyone and have dropped a few likes along the way as I've wandered through the recent offerings.

I don't generally recap what I've appreciated along the way, but thought I'd do so this morning as I sip my cold mint tea. Sue tells me I need to do everything I can to cool down my body when I have a rash... no garlic or hot spices and plenty of cooling foods. When I'm finished with the tea I'll prepare a juice made with celery, cucumber and apple...

Ric - Love the series you posted from the demonstration. The choice of black and white is spot on. I love all of the photos but as others have noted, the closeup of the woman making her point is first rate.

Buddy - Wonderful to see your work on the thread again and a delight to see you beautiful child. Amazing to realize how many newborns have arrived to folks who from time to time hang out on this thread. I haven't seen Chuong for some time but he has had THREE children during his tenure with us. You and Chin, our other resident father have a way to go...

Georg - I'll echo Leighton's comments on the bench photo. It is just about perfect on every level. Of course, you regularly give us lessons in composition and processing. Your presence always enriches this thread.

Colin - Loving what you're posting... including what I've seen on the Shooting with Tubes thread. You, Steve, Ronnie and Kevin have made appearances on that thread. I hope to see more from Jose and Ken B. I might have to add something myself...

Andy - You night sky shot is really awe inspiring. I never see skies like this rambling around this urban region. It is when you and Jay or occasionally John show us a sky free of urban lights that we really get a sense of how awesome is this universe in which we find ourselves. I read there are 100 BILLION galaxies in the universe and ours, the Milky Way, has 300 BILLION stars. I won't even try to do the math... but it would seem our solar system is a rather infinitesimal dot on a very large canvas. I love this quote from the Buddha...

"The universe and its inhabitants are as ephemeral as the clouds
in the sky;
Being born and dying are like a spectacular dance or
drama show.
The duration of our lives is like a flash of lightning or a firefly's
brief twinkle;
Everything passes like the flowing waters of a steep waterfall."

Scott, Leighton, Peter O and Jeff bring us back to earth with lovely photos of the worlds they inhabit. One thing that I so enjoy about this thread is that I'm given so many opportunities to see this amazing world we are blessed to call home. Thanks guys.

Ram - Welcome back stranger. I definitely am looking forward to learning more about your move to this new home. You have been quite the vagabond on this thread, a true example of the present state of employment. Your life reminds me a bit of what Laura has experienced as member of a military family. Moving was regular part of that life, as it seems to be part of yours. Tell us more Ram...

Welcome to the thread Brian. I'd like to encourage you and others new to the thread to add your first name to your profile. It will help old codgers like me who have difficulty remembering names. We are on a first name basis on this thread so it can help. Glad you found us. Don't hesitate to share photos and contribute to the conversation. We are blessed to have a great many fine folks playing with us.

Steve - You really know how to stir the single malt juices. You're killing me here. I'm even checking flights to Manchester... assuming, of course, that you're give me a tour, WITH tasting... through your drinks closet... I love the photos from your tour through Scotland. I love the land and the people. I certainly wish them well during this confusing and conflicting time of Brexit. I've always thought they should be independent, but then I don't get a vote...

Jim - Again, really sorry about your health challenges... but then again, I'm delighted that during your convalescence you've had the opportunity to ramble through your world and take the wonderful photos you've been sharing with us. You are clearly a master as handling a camera and using the lenses we all love.

Laura - LOVE the photos from the air museum. What a wonderful place to wander through with a camera in hand... all those delicious angles to capture. Excellent framing.

And for those who participated in the duct tape conversation, I laughed out loud. PERFECT. Thanks everyone.

The only time I've gotten a rash in the woods was when my 1972 Toyota Corolla station wagon fell off the side of a mountain in northern California. I didn't notice the poison oak where the front of the car came to rest against a tree... but that is a story for another time. THIS rash came as a result of trying to make a rather radical change to my diet. Here is what breakfast and lunch looked like LAST week...

28.2.NC.Breakfast by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

28.2.NC.LCHFLunch by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

I was experimenting with what is essentially the old Atkins diet, a low carbohydrate, high fat diet, which recent research has concluded is both very good for the heart and even better for dropping a few pounds. I'd read about the "Ketogenic flu" but NOT about the "Ketogenic rash" which grabbed me with vengeance. Not everyone who pursues this diet develops a rash. Those who do find the only solution to be increasing carb intake, which essentially makes a ketogenic diet impossible. I know from the pain this rash has caused, that I'm not about to take that route again. My buddy, who started the diet at the same time is cruising along. So my exploration continues.

I imagine, these plates don't look that different from what you eat Leighton... I will definitely miss bacon!

Maybe the bacon part. I eat eggs almost every morning and my cholesterol is perfect. Must be my eggs. I know...a new marketing scheme.

Curtis,

Funny you should mention tubes. As I write this I am charging batteries for my cheap macro ring light in preparation for some macro work now that the garden is starting to flourish.

This was taken a couple of weeks ago in my rock garden. It is a small Lego keyring given to me by my children. I had to remove the chain from Darth's head in PS. Not a great job but adequate.
I have been saving it for May the Fourth. It is only the 3rd of May in the UK but the 4th already for many of our acquaintances east of the meridian.

I think that the tour of the Whisky stock is a good idea Curtis !!

Though the cabinet is at my sisters on the Isle of Skye ......

But you are always welcome to have a snifter or two at my table !!

I think I got carried away with the panoramas of Scotland

Using the D810 with both a 15mm and a (Leighton lens) 50-135mm

I will post one at a time ...... and hope I don't break anyones screen ....

the smallest file is 12 frames in width and the largest 21 frames wide !!

Now who's crazy ..... oh yeah .... That's me !!

First shot is at the top of Glen Coe just after you cross The Rannoch Moor

The prominent mountain on the left is well known from magazine shots .... the Buachaille Etive Mor
