I have a question, I'm not very familiar with Nikon AI and AIS lenses, i want to buy a 105mm f 2.5 and get an adapter and put it on my Sony, so do i want an AI or AIS version of the lens or does it matter?

As James says, the older AI lens has a longer focus throw. It also lacks the built-in hood of the AiS lens, though it doesn't lock into place and some feel is too short. Finally, the AI lens has rounded aperture blades, and the AiS has straight blades, which affects the bokeh at smaller apertures. Many prefer the AI lens, but I'm an AiS fan: I _like_ the short focus-throw and flimsy built-in hood! Either lens will work fine with an adapter.
This is a very long thread and I know there's a lot of experienced people on here with Nikon glass experience.
I'm interested in the 105 mm F 2.5 AI I know it's like took the world's most famous picture of the Afghan girl and all of that but I'm getting like mixed people telling me different things on different forms about this lens some say it's sharp wide open some say it's not.
I'm wondering people that own this lens on here or have used it what is your take on this lens it seems to be like legendary I'm definitely ready to pull the trigger on one I just want to hear from a few more people on it thanks guys.

There's no contesting that the 105/2.5 _is_ a legendary lens. It's the one Nikkor that I regretted selling (to fund the purchase of the Micro-Nikkor 105/2.8), and had to re-purchase. No lens is at it's sharpest wide-open, but the 105/2.5 is a relatively unambitious design, so is reasonably good at f/2.5. In my experience, it's quite a bit better at f/5.6, but this depends a lot on your shooting distance (close-up or infinity) and the type of shot (portrait vs. landscape), so is a pretty subjective question. Honestly, for its design (a compact, moderately fast portrait lens), there really is nothing better in Nikon-land, even including 3rd party offerings, and you should buy with confidence. Since you're getting the AI version, don't forget that you will need a hood (the AiS version has a built-in hood): I prefer the HN-7 (screw-in) vs. the much more common HS-8 (snap-on, reversible)

Nicely done as usual Leighton. You captured the moodiness of a low light snow day well!

It is a beautiful picture in B&W... But I bet he is grumpy in Staunton dealing with the snow
Why grumpy? He's retired, probably kicking back with a hot cup of coffee, in front of the fireplace, enjoying the view, and watching his lovely wife shovel the snow off the porch, while us still working folk battle the elements to get into work.
I love all four of these, Attila. Wonderful light on the first, and good use of shallow DOF on all four. Welcome to the manual focus Nikkor thread.

Recent grandson photo. It is really hard to keep up with all the images 5 grand kids generate - had to update my photo drive to 16Tb Nikkor 85mm f1.4 ais
