Some concert photos from last night, using the Nikkor 85/1.4 Ai-S. The first one below might have been with the 50/1.4 Ai-S; it looks more like it (the OOF highlights have onion rings, which I've noticed a lot with that lens but not with the 85). The rest are definitely the 85!

With all the old film cameras I have been acquiring - sometimes they include the case or more. The leather work are really done extremely well, unfortunately, age makes them very brittle and dry. While re-sewing a Yashica TLR case I had the thread tear out one of the holes. So I looked for some kind of leather rejuvenator, and an amazing product aptly call "Dr Jackson's Leather Rejuvenator." was purchased. The middle small case was a light sand color with a very glossy finish - one wipe down and a rich mahogany tone emerged, and even the strap relaxed and became flexible. I plan to treat first and sew later to restore these original cases....Show more →
Jim, I highlighted and did a quick search on "Dr Jackson's Leather Rejuvenator" and it brought up Tandy Leather. Have not seen that name in ages, brought a smile to my face!

I will look into that product! My leather-rejuvenation needs are my Volvo V70R which has a very rare orange "baseball glove" leather interior (called Atacama). It is very dangerous to use most leather cleaning products on Atacama as unlike most car-interior leather it has no real surface finish, pretty much raw leather, and it tends to discolour dramatically if you use the wrong product. I was recommended to try Griot's Garage Leather Rejuvenator and bought a bottle, but have yet to try it out (waiting for warmer weather).
Well, this product definitely changed the color of the case I treated. It "Replaces Natural Oils". You just put it on and leave it a while to soak in - then buff. It somehow goes right through the existing finish and soaks into the leather. Doesn't have one word to say about what is in it, but I like the smell and result. Says to not use it on suede, and that it may darken leather. I got the 6oz tub that has the consistency of room temperature butter. YMMV

James, I have a few folder cases myself, I’ll have to pick up some of that product, thanks for the tip.
Happy coincidence yesterday, went to see if the sunset was any good and caught Space X launch. 3.5cm f/2.5 and 400mm f/5.6. Not print worthy but interesting to watch.

Brad,I like this set. It is like you are sitting among the musicians, and the compositions are tight. Perhaps a 35mm f1.4 ais would give you the same bokeh, but more context?

Thanks, Jim! These were from a set of about 90 photos that I shared with the musicians, and many of the others were shot with a 50/1.4 ai-s and a few with the 28/1.4 af-d. I never know where they are going to seat me at this club, and this time I was at a table right next to the stage. So I used the wider lenses quite a bit but used the 85 for these portrait-like shots.

Oh, jealous here! The 28mm f1.4 has eluded me for so many years, that I have two poor man make-dos. That would be the perfect lens for being so close to the action.

It is indeed a great lens, although I only use it in manual mode (I've never used autofocus on my camera and since I'm using a Sony it wouldn't work with this lens anyway except with the expensive and not entirely reliable Monster adapter). And it's not as responsive as I'd like in manual mode: the focus throw is extremely short and there's a slight lag in response. But I put up with those things for the rendering, which is really nice!

These are wonderful! That’s such a nice lens. I love your black and white photos on your Flickr page…well done!
Thank you so much!
I do love that lens, although what I didn't realize when I bought it is that later models of the Nikkor 85/1.4 have more rounded aperture blades. I tend to shoot it wide open because I don't like the shapes of its out-of-focus highlights even when stopped down just one stop to f2, but shooting wide open means it's a bit soft and quite hard to nail focus. I do have a Nikon-mount 28-70 f/2.8 zoom (a Tokina), but f2.8 is too slow for most of the jazz clubs where I take photos and after trying it once I went back to primes.
hi guys, couple days ago I bought a nikkor 28mm f3.5 ai just because it was very cheap and I want to try a 28mm (I'm a 35mm guy, I shoot with a zeiss f2 zf2). I know I'm a bit too late, but.... is this lens so bad? I can't find many reviews about it

Need to give this 105/1.8 some more use
Not the sharpest wide open at close range - but I love the dreamy feeling
Excellent work with the 105/1.8 there, Morten! I always lusted over this lens, though I couldn't justify the expense (especially as I already had a 105mm lens), but with the way prices for MF lenses have gone lately I was able to find a very minty, late serial-no copy. I can't say it replaces my 105/2.5 in my heart, but it really does have that dreamy look wide-open, and is actually pretty similar to my old standby, the 24/2, much maligned by pixel-peepers.

I would just go and shoot with it for awhile. Price means nothing concerning image quality, and reviews mean even less - imo.

I have the original F mount version of the 28/3.5 and its my favorite of the 28's. Lots of character and when you get sunstars, they are beautiful!

I agree with Kevin. I really enjoy my 28/3.5. Like you, I picked it up very cheap, but have thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think it’s more that the 28mm f/2.8 AIS overshadows other Nikkors. I have one and like it, I have to pixel peep to see difference and its size is attractive. Only issue I have with it is a CPL will hard vignette. Otherwise good to go.
