Thanks Paul. Funny you should ask this. I'm very much still in the stage of finding the right settings and determining just what this setup can and can't do well. I've been meaning to post a question here for you guys that are more familiar to try and get some feedback. I haven't yet because I haven't had a chance to look over previous threads and I don't want to be redundant. One big observation for me so far has been the Bird Subject detect seems to work great for a flying bird but seems to really struggle with a perched bird ??
I believe when I shot that hawk I would have been in C-AF and S-IS Auto ...Show more →
I had always used IS Auto as well until a friend (fellow OM-1 user) advised using IS-1. I switched to IS-1 and I 'believe' I get more keepers with perched and BIF (this years BIF season is just starting now so I am short on data to analyze just yet).
a few months ago i read/heard Petr Bambousek uses IS-2 (panning) for BIF so I tried that (still have that setting active for BIF). I honestly don't know if it's an improvement or not as I am also pretty dull regarding these types of observations which is why I ask others about these things
Thanks for your time.
I use auto and C-AF electronic shutter even for perched birds. I take multiple shots even with perched birds and at high shutter speeds because one never knows when the critter takes off.
So, 1/3200 C-AF SH-2 25 f/s (mark 1) Subject ID bird S-IS auto. Adjust exp comp in AUTO ISO

Thanks for the feedback guys. Really appreciate it. I'll keep experimenting and see how it goes.
I traded some "Z" stuff that wasn't getting enough use for this combo specifically to have a smallish, lightweight option that I wouldn't hesitate to bring along in a "just in case" scenario. This hawk was hunting freely in a park/playground where we often bring our grandson. Needless to say I was very happy he showed up this day.
