p.15 #1 · The Contax 100-300 Vario-Sonnar

Well I finally pulled the trigger on picking up this lens. I got lucky and found a flawless one on ebay with a serial number in the 84xxxxx range =). I'll be going to Japan and Vietnam for 3 weeks each starting in April and can't wait to see how the lens performs. I just pray that the hot humid weather of Vietnam doesn't cause any issues with the A7RII and this lens.

I've always shot with Canon bodies and L glass which together have great weather sealing that has never failed me in south east asia. I'm praying the A7RII will hold up with proper care.

Looks like I will be joining this exclusive club. A7II, 300mm, F/8. Somebody is having a barbecue on his balcony mid left :-)

Not sure if I posted the shot before. Most likely did, but can't remember.

Got mine about 4 years ago here, but after about 1 year rear element went completely cloudy. Contacted Zeiss and they mailed me a spanking new replacement element (for a price of course) which pretty much saved the lens and money, as it is rather pricey now even here.

Here it is in Kyushu.

hey, you can get zeiss to send you parts rather than just repairing the whole lens!

what did you have to do to get them to send you the rear element?

Just wrote a letter explaining the situation. Can't remember exactly who that was, but the person was very understanding.
They recommended me sending the lens, but I assured them that I was capable of removing the element myself and they were fine with that.

Think I might still have the way bill at home...

That is quite possible. I replaced the element about 3 years ago, I think...

hmm, i want a rear element, but couldn't send it in because it's AE rather than MM. just having them send me the part sounds great...

You can always ask. I find that doubling amount of time for an element that doesn't need special aligning on installation not at all feasible, so that was my reason...

A CY 100-300 is very sensitive for where you focus. Even beyond 100 meters and at F/8. Like here, two shots: first have focus on the mid orange buidling 100 meters away, 2nd focus is set on balconys 300 meter away. As an image, which is to prefer? Identical sharpness treatments on both but colors went a bit different for unknown reasons.

As a composite image, I would prefer both.

Looks like it's a keeper, eh?

Oh that's clever, I'll post a composite worthy of the Sony FE thread :-)

Wilhelm...I am probably going to run into you some time this year.
Frequenting my friend's record store at Hökens gata...

Speaking of 100-300 - I tend to focus at 300, then re-zoom and shoot.
Not sure if it's parafocal or not - it works for me 99% of the time, same as with 35-70 actually.

Thanks Peire, being such hard to find it is too good to be sold. For the record, here's the composite as it soon will drown in the Sony FE thread

Oh, looking forward to that. Ages ago the was a legendary 2nd hand record store up there on Höken but I thought it was closed down, is it him - or a newer store? I recall finding one of my Motörhead records there when vinyl still was the thing. If you're into records, you probably know Petsounds not too far away?

Vinyl is the only way to fly..

It's Snickars records. He moved it few times around, but seems to be settled now at the current address.
His girlfriend is running art gallery there as well.

I think I know the store you mention - but indeed, I think it's closed. There was another closure just last year - or maybe it's a same shop?

Petsounds sounds familiar, but I don't think I ventured in there though..

I like Graveyard. I sold all of my vinyl early this year. Unlike Joe Walsh, I'm a digital man.
