Thank you for your feedback. I'm actually using 10x Live VIew on a tripod with a delayed shutter (I should have mentioned this before). The subject probably wasn't ideal for checking focus though. Here is a followup test with some nice, stationary text. Same shooting method as before so I don't think even I could miss focus on this one. Standard picture style on a 60D if that helps.
If I'm just crazy, tell me so and I'll stop pixel peeping. I just don't know much about old, alt lenses yet so I thought I'd throw my offering on the Alt Lens Altar and ask for guidance. Thanks again for your patience.
that looks pretty good for a FF f/1.2 on an 18mp crop camera. i wouldn't expect to get significant improvement without going through a fair number of copies, but there are some out there that are undoubtedly sharper.
Right, I agree. Remember the 58/1.2 images that were posted here that looked so awesome were both processed with sharpening, contrast, and etc. and scaled down to web size in almost every case. Doing that makes any lens look sharp even if it's a total dud. Hehe, I've seen some holga lens adapted to the GF1 that looked like a zeiss almost - scaled. But you just gotta know that it looks like total crap at 100%.
Fair enough. I appreciate your help. I'll stop worrying about it and just take pictures. I guess I was just surprised that my Takumar is sharper at the same apertures and I thought the Rokkor would sharpen up more by f2.0. There is no denying the appeal of its bokeh though.

as a general rule with the f/1.2 and f/1.4 lenses i've used the f/1.4 lenses seem to be sharper from f/2 - f/2.8 with the the f/1.2 lenses catching up or surpassing around f/4 (there's always some exceptions). f/1.4 seems to be anybodies guess depending on manufacturer and the f/1.2 lenses are obviously sharper at f/1.2.
Of course there exceptions and exceptional lenses too though. Excuse me for posting a Canon in a Rokkor thread but the Canon FD 85mm F/1.2 is one such lens:
thanks both of you, i was a bit bothered by the busy bokeh around those stalks too, but i really like the tone and light in the upper half of the frame, so i decided to keep it. the lens has a bokeh that definitely leans towards funky, i always have to be careful. it can definitely give some "interesting" results, whether you like them is a matter of taste (or lack there of ). http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1439/5180941669_d5bb93fa68_o.jpg
Hey nandreeta I dont know what to tell you man, but sample variation is a big part of vintage lenses. I would think that would be doubly true for lenses like the 58mm f1.2 that is a serious chunk of glass.
I have only had the opportunity to run one roll of film through that lens (and I did not and will not convert it, esp. since I dont have a digital camera anymore) and it felt sharp enough wide open for me. Im not certain how mine would fare against yours on your camera, but I doubt it would be better.
Id love to really test mine but dont have a way to, sorry.
Hello,
Thanks to all for the great shots and great information!
Is there a noticeable difference between a PG and X lens?
Specifically 58f1.2 MC ROKKOR-X which it looks like I'm about to purchase...
Do any of these cause mirror problems on a 5DMKii?
I can deal with occasional mirror hangs after exposure when the mirror returns, I guess that is okay.
But mirror crashes when going up, would be a bad thing.

if i remember correctly PG and X just varies with when the lens was produced and/or what country it was sold in. unless you shave the mirror i believe the chances of a mirror collision at infinity are near 100% focusing closer than 20 ft shouldn't be an issue though.
