I had all intentions to do that, and I did; but then I realized that the "main steam jar and crazy scientist" would be in the center of the frame and violate the “rule of thirds”.

A little late for a change now, but you are correct, even when I thought that with a black shirt the main focus would be the “smoke”, the shirt was a little distracting.
I just reduced a touch the highlights instead of bringing them to total black.

Don't let 'rules' override your vision ... sometimes they are simply guidelines where vision is lacking. Your own vision was probably better than the rule on this one.
