For my taste, I prefer the higher contrast post shot.

What my eyes are seeing is a different between depth that creates a pop out feeling (leica) and depth that creates a deep window feeling (zeiss). They are both lovely, and I would guess the scene would indicate which was better at a given time.

Thrice - your panos are absolutely fantastic.

Ditto on the candids Charles.

To be honest, what my thoughts the last couple of days have been. I think I'm selling off all of my gear, see where I am financially, and decide on getting a full frame camera and one lens (to start).

It will be between the m9 and 5dmk2 I suppose - although I should consider the nikon, I just don't know anything about the system. I think I'll be at about 4500-5000 after selling off everything, so I have to decide whether I want to spend more money or not. Unfortunately I can't even rent a rangefinder here to see if it's for me.. I doubt the one camera shop selling them locally has a demo model... if they have any. In the last year I have learned a lot about what I want.. what my needs are.. and frankly I spent too fast before figuring that out. Fortunately I'm not losing too much for the experience.. and I guess it was necessary for me.

I could of course try an m8 or m8.2, but I am pretty set on wanting full frame. The m9 durability scares me.

You are all excellent!

Thank you Ryan, Luka, Joe and Edward

Joe, really nice shots! My favourite is #3.

Luka, excellent shots! Despite the differences in perceived rendering, they are excellent shots. Looking as a third person, after the not seeing the original image, it is very difficult to make an assessement, as it is your vision, how you would like to see the images. Quite often, images that I initially shot, I passed by, but come back at a later date, and think OK, I like these. Carsten has some very valid points too
I feel you may be better suited to the ZM 85/2 lens, as this lens is really one of the best of the Zeiss lineup, and may match your perception and style.

Dan, great shots!!! Love seeing the variety

Edward, I feel you would be best suited to a FF DSLR and one lens. A minimalist approach, but not too expensive and it would give more useability initially. Unless weight and form factor is a real issue, (which for me is a big one ), maybe the 5DII and Zeiss lens , second hand, with a MF screen fitted. Then if you quickly grow out of the 5DII, there is really no downside. Good luck

this is an amazing shot! are you using color filters for any of these?

luka: i have to say i agree with you assessment of the leica (cron) look versus the zeiss look, but for people shots i think i like the leica look better (there will always be exceptions of course). i like the unprocessed version better too.

Why did you reduce the saturation? It looks like neither Zeiss nor Leica.

I think the Zeiss look is partly about contrast (Leica also has high micro-contrast, just lower overall contrast) and the dof transition, possibly including the edge effects that Brainiac was always bringing up. It works well to enhance photos, but if you don't want an enhanced photo, just what you saw, the Leica works better, IMO. The only aspect of reality that the Leica messes with is the foreground-background separation, which is stronger than in real life. It is quite a big change, actually, and maybe the reason

Carsten, what makes you think I wanted to emulate Zeiss? And clearly I did not want the Leica look or I would have left it as it is. The reason why I lowered the saturation is because I liked it better with lowered saturation.

I agree with you on the strong foreground/background separation and less global contrast but not about the micro contrast. Although I have not shot any direct comparison shots my impression is that the 75 Cron has a much lower micro contrast compared to for instance the Zeiss 100 MP. I'll shoot some direct comparisons later and post them here.

Thanks Charles. The problem with the ZM 85/2, which I was very very tempted by (if nothing else then for the focal length) is that it's big and heavy. The 75 Cron is actually a tad too big for my liking. Apart from wanting to try a high end Leica, size was the primary reason why I ruled out the Zeiss.

I have not shot any tightly cropped portraits with it yet, so I'll reserve my judgement there. I'm not happy about what I've seen of its rendering of skin color though - too much orange and too saturated. Having said that, I need to shoot more before I can say anything definitive.

I did my standard set of night shots yesterday night and I'm for the most part happy with the rendering and the colors.

First my standard car test shot. I've photographed this car with almost every lens I have so it has sort of become a standard benchmark. It is usually conveniently parked in the same place so I always end up photographing it. There is actually a much nicer old SAAB from the 60's and a Jaguar E-type in the neighborhood as well but where they park is much more random.

Comment: Not bad. Not much in the way of 3D pop but still a fairly competent rendering. FG/BG separation is good as are the OOF areas.

Ok, moving on:

Comment: Colors and details are excellent but very little depth in the image.

Comment: Solid rendering with a bit more depth.

Comment: I like the rendering here, very nice clarity. Almost Zeiss like

As always, the aperture in the EXIF for long exposures is always set to f/4, which is not correct. The first shot was at f/2 while the rest were at f/5.6-f/8.

Thankyou everyone

Nice to see you giving the 75 cron a workout Luka, is this a new one? Or still the miscalibrated one?

Lovely portraits Rod.

Sebboh, on that particular pano I used a 3 stop Lee ND grad.

I posted an unprocessed version of this shot when I was in New Zealand, this one doesn't look much different, just a little brighter.

25mm Biogon, 3 stop lee ND grad and B+W Kaesemann Linear pol

A pano with the 75 Cron, no filters

A pano with the 25mm Biogon, B+W ND1.8 (6 stops)

I thought the shot would look better from the other side of the river, so I started walking through, but the incredible stabbing pain from the freezing water turned me back, plus it was flowing pretty heavy. The lake and river are fed by glaciers and have icebergs floating in them.

Luka, excellent shots! IMO I am really liking the rendering My 75 Cron, hopefully will arrive by the end of the week

Rod, great portraits. Love the 50 Lux though The B&W portrait is stunning.

Dan, it's the same lens. The shop was closed yesterday. I'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Charles, great shots! I especially love the first one. Superb tonality, great composition, light and everything!! The other shots are also great. #3 stands out as does #4 and come to think about it #2 as well. Fantastic work - the 28 Elmarit seems to suit you.

A couple of bokeh tests of some of my standard subjects:

That last shot makes me wonder why I got into this whole M9 thing.

1) I had to practically lie on the frozen ground so that I could see through the viewfinder and focus.
2) I had to retake the shot four times before I got the framing and focus right.
3) The result is not just uninteresting, it's down right ugly. The bokeh, colors, contrast and the dynamic range are all by my expectations sub standard.

With a 5DII I would have taken that shot in a tenth of the time, comfortably standing up and the result would have been good with any number of lenses. Clearly the M9 is not the correct tool to use in a situation where carrying heavier gear is not a problem.

As you might have noticed, I'm feeling highly resentful towards Leica right now. I have to go out and shoot some ducks with the 75 and perhaps my mood will improve..

Thank you Luka The 28 FL has always been a favourite of mine, but I was put off with the ZE 28, and really there was nothing in the Canon lineup that I liked. I appreciate the comments

Luka, I am really liking your shots! Yes you are right, sometimes only the 5DII will do. Looking forward to your duck shots

Thanks Charles. I also really like the B/W conversion you did, especially the first three shots.

Anyway, I promised some tests and here they are. As I'm comparing different focal lenghts and two different camera systems, the framing is sort off. There are two things I want to show here, one is microcontrast and the other one is bokeh. I don't think the deviation in framing should affect it too much. The bokeh is of course affected by focal length.

So, let's start with micro contrast and overall rendering. The lenses are the Canon 70-200/II, Zeiss 85 Planar and Leica 75 Summicron AA.

For best results open the images in separate tabs and flip between them

All shot at f/8

100% crops:

Leica:

Zeiss:

Canon:

In terms of contrast: Zeiss > Canon >> Leica
In terms of micro contrast (look particularly at the windows) Zeiss >> Leica > Canon
In terms of resolution: Leica > Zeiss >> Canon

The advantage of the no-AA Leica sensor is really slight. I can't say that I'm really impressed by the washed out colors of the Leica. I'm surprised though as I've so far felt that it had a tendency to oversaturate things. Perhaps it has something to do with the light.

Ok, then on to bokeh. I've added a Rokkor 58/1.2 in the mix as well here:

Leica @f/2:

Zeiss @f/2:

Canon @f/2.8:

Rokkor @f/2:

Zeiss @f/1.4

Rokkor @f/1.2

Bokeh quality is of course subjective, but I'd put the Leica last in terms of interesting rendering.

Really perfect light here and great composition with the running girl and her shadow. The only minor thing I'd change is the lower left corner which is unexposed (inverse grad filter in lightroom). Oh, and the B/W conversion is just perfect with the vignette.

My favorite of the lot. There are so many great elements here. The surfer in relation to the city (both vertical elements), the wave and the very directional rock drawing you into the image. There is also a nice symmetry in shape between the rocks on the far right and the coastline in the background.

Again, many cool elements here. The guy looking towards the breaking wave and city. The geometry of the surfboard in relations to the rocks. Awesome
