Thank you Ryan, Airfrog, Michael, Doug and Phil, and for all the likes
Ryan, yes I agree slightly less NR on the shot would have been ideal, but this is how it translated when I downsized the shot with Lr5. This trying different ways for now.
Wonderful set of shots of your model daughter!! Favorite is the first and last shot.
Winston, nice images from China
Michael, nice rich colors!
TAG, nice wedding capture!
Luka, great to see you back! Wonderful set of shots

Adam, @f/5.6 and slower, you're not going to see much, if any difference between the 21 SEM and ZM21/2.8. The 21 SEM wide open is a better lens - much flatter plane of focus and already extremely sharp across the frame. The ZM21/2.8 has some field curvature and as a result, wide open sharpness is best in the central area with flat planes (walls, etc.). IMO, the benefit of the SEM is you don't have to think about what aperture you're shooting at. It's just sharp. Always. Therefore, for technically demanding applications,
...Show more

Ron,

Thanks for all of this. I think I've read your link before, but I did give it another go this morning.

I take it nobody has played with the 18 SEM?
I'm actually REALLY considering the 21 LUX, but that's nudging into Noctilux or 50 APO territory, and I shoot 50mm 90% of the time with Leica, so if money's being spent, it should be spent on a 50mm. I'm actually considering one of the SEM lenses, or the 21 ZM, just wondering if it's worth double the price to pickup an SEM over the ZM, something only I can answer at the end of the day I guess..

My 28cron serves me well, and I like it, but I can't help but think that I should have stuck with the 28 elmarit-asph, as I really do miss the way the lens rendered. I'm thinking, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the 28 cron is like the 21 LUX, how the 28 elmarit-asph is to the 21 SEM? If this is a fair assessment, then I might just save a boatload of money, buy the 21 SEM, and call it a day.

I only really need the lens for my honeymoon in italy, whenever that happens.. Since I've been busy with work, and haven't booked the trip. But I'll probably not sell it off afterwards.

if you only shoot a lens 10% of the time, it makes sense to go with the less expensive option.

I can't even find reports on how it does on the 240, but the 21mm super-angulon f3.4 is still my favorite lens in this focal length and the price, at least here in the states, is comparable to the ZM.

but ultimately decisions of budget (which usually boil down to "do I REALLY want to spend that much?") are hard to give advice on. I believe that technically speaking, the 21 SEM is the easy winner. Not because it's by a huge margin, but because I don't think it has an aperture where it is weaker than any other 21 and it does have some that are stronger than all of the alternatives. at least going on the MTFs. that does not mean the Biogon is not a viable choice. and clearly the Lux is in it's own special place.

This won't help you, but I think the 21 Lux has fairly similar character to the 50 Lux ASPH when shot wide open. Both aren't super, super clinically sharp, instead they have that hint of 'Leica glow.' As a result, I believe the 21 Lux has a certain smoothness to its rendering that you don't get from the SEM, which instead is insanely sharp with pretty high micro contrast. Thorsten Overgaard had an interesting summary of the 21 Lux in his M240 running review. Basically also thinks it's best used wide open.

The SEM is the one to go with if you simply want technical perfection (as close as one can currently find at 21mm for M-mount). It'll be great for landscapes, city scenes & all around use. It's also pretty small & takes the typical 46mm filters.

The Lux is really best shot wide open to take advantage of its wide open look, or stopped well down. As I mentioned in the write-up, between around 2.8-5.6 it has odd mid zone sharpness that can be distracting if there's a lot of detail in that area of a scene. Therefore, I use it wide open (or f/2), or stopped down to f/8 or smaller. Another PITA with it is the stupid Series VIII filter implementation. Difficult to find those, and you'll want a ND for sure if you're going to shoot it wide open in the sun. I think B+W still offers at least a couple options... and Ryan K in this thread, I believe, confirmed you can use certain 62mm filters in there too since they're narrow enough to fit into the hood which acts as the filter retaining ring. If you're thinking about the Lux, then the CV might fit the bill without blowing your budget.

I guess it really depends on what you want out of the lens...

As for the 18 SEM... from what I've read about it, it is somewhat weaker into the corners than the 21 SEM and will need to be stopped down to bring them up. Though not having used it personally, I'm not sure how 'bad' the corners really are, since everyone seems to have different interpretations of this.

There are at least a couple guys who've posted here with the 18: Bijltje (Robert) and Bobu (Boris). Might be worth sending each a PM? Boris also had the 21 SEM (he's currently out of the Leica system) and should be able to give you a good idea about each. Another option is the ZM18, which is highly regarded, though kind of a fat lens. At least it uses 'normal' filters. I believe the 18 SEM needs some sort of adapter for ~77mm filters.

Joe and Michael here both have/had the ZM21/2.8 and seem to like it. As I already stated, for me, I'd go with the SEM over the ZM. You just never have to think twice about the SEM's performance.

From a walk in the woods:

Was messing around with B&W conversion options (channel mixer) in LR4 for the first and third, to amp up tonality/contrast differences in each. The third was a decaying Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) in case anyone is wondering...

M9 & 50 Lux ASPH for first and third, Nikkor 10.5cm/2.5 LTM for the second.

In my view the Summicron 28 and the SEM 21 are very close in their respective rendering.

There are similarities, but I think the colors are a bit bolder, more saturated with the 28 Cron. But yes, I'd say the Cron is more similar to the SEM than the Lux.

Adam, Boris (user Bobu) used the 18 SEM and 21 SEM among others on his trip to Patagonia and he wrote a summary of his experience with the lenses in this thread (just scroll down a bit).

(Edit: I didn't see Ron's post before I wrote this)

Has anyone any experience with using Hoya ND filters? My favorite brand is B+W but they are so bloody hard to get hold of and I would need a 2-stop filter for an upcomming trip.

Fantastic work from everyone on the last few pages!

I am currently on an oversea trip with limited access to a proper computer, just an iPad. I hope to post something worthwhile next week.

Guys thank you all for the comments.. I'll check out Boris' post, n maybe shoot him a PM.

I'm leaning more towards the 21 SEM, as I feel the rendering is going to be similar to the 28elmarit-asph based on the images I've seen.. That high micro contrast look you all talk about.

But I'll do a bit more poking around before I decide. And yes, it's going to be used mainly for my upcoming honeymoon in Italy, so buildings, etc.
