Thanks Phil, Ron, Heinz, Charles, Malkovic, Ryan

Gregory, another very nice set!

Phil, very nice look to the color version of the house.

Ron, nice sunset shot by the lake.

Heinz, congrats on the CV 50/1.5! Its a lovely lens, somewhat moderate in contrast but very sharp and smooth! I had one but only sold it because my 50 Lux ASPH arrived. Share some pics soon.

Charles, #1 is super! Really nice. Very classic looking tones to go with!

Ryan, excellent set!! I like the "busy" bokeh look of the 50Cron a lot. Think this lens is a keeper

-----
Sample 100% crop of the 50Lux ASPH from yesterday. Its not my most used focal length, but the combination of the M9 and 50Lux produces IQ par excellence. I was shooting straight into harsh light and details are intact and it suppresses flare really well.

Joe - thanks. Isn't that 50 Lux/M9 set amazing. Look at that detail, wow. I can almost count the hairs on Rico's chest

As far as the 50 Cron - yes, its a keeper . Here is another bokeh ball shot

Thanks Ron, Joe, Gregory, Phil & Malkovic

Ron, excellent examlple shots. Regarding Fuji 800 and other press films AFIK they are not up to the standards of the top end films. The image quality in printed media is usually pretty low so the requirements for the technical quality of the source material are not usually high. Beuatiful shot from Lake Geneva by the way - I really like the colors.

Joe, excellent classic street shots. My favorite is the first one where you incorporated the statues in the image. As for my ektar shots, the source material is really crap. I've used excessive sharpening in PS to the best of my abilities to get them to appear sharp.

Gregory, nice set - very intense as usual. As for film in this thread..well, times change

Phil, love the old house shot!

Charles, very nice portraits with the 50 Lux.

Ryan, very nice sets with the 50 Cron! Great OOF rendering on the last shot.

--

I got the color negs today and scanned a couple of them myself and there was a great improvement in image quality. For some reason though they were cropped somewhat. I'll have to investigate that and see if I can fix it.

Until then, a few more shop-scanned photos:

I happen to know the lenses in this case:

1# 50 Lux ASPH, #2, #3 28 Cron ASPH, #5 & #6 50 Lux ASPH

Nothing special, first test. I LOVE that rendering.

Variations on a reflection pool. I've shot this pool many times with a variety of lenses but I never seem tire of it. It does of course help that there's almost always a duck or two to be found

Thanks you guys. I reallyt apprecaite you all taking the time to comment on my work. And again I appologies for not commenting speciaflaly on other's work.
I will say that I love this s thread I look in every chance I get. And I love what I am seeing.
It inspire me to get out ad shoot just for the fun of photography.

About getting run off, I was just playing it up. And the fact is, at that point, I didnt have a M9 and wanted to be part of this thread.
I knew , I was doing wrong and it was only a matter of time before I was exposed Damn film shooter, trying to slide in on a digital thread. How does he think he is .
As far as shooting film, I am still banging away with my Leica M3 and MP and the widelux F7 and the Nikon F3T/FM/F2AS, it's just I not scanning them and posting. There are only so many hours in a day And as it is, I have so much post processing on digital to do from last couple of week's it's not even funny. And so the work I am doing with film is right, now just for me. Those pictures will have to be in my minds eye for the time being.

The most 'normal' of my lenses - a focal length which i always disliked, has quickly become my favorite lens of all time (This was a very tough choice between the 100mm Zeiss MP and the 85L II). The lens always seems to produce excellent images reliably. I wish I could publish some of the portraits/people picture i've taken which have come out magnificently.. but anyway.

P.S. Please don't start with me on the 'if you liked this you should try the nocti......'
My lens collection related happiness is at a status quo right now.

all i need now is access to a cat

M9 & ZM21

Charles: these are very nice! I find your most recent rePPd portraits have a calmer feel to them. Perhaps it's the reduced saturation and more neutral WB. Whatever it is, it's working very well.

LL: funny, I thought the 85L was my favourite too... then I got the 50L and it slowly won that spot. Lately I've hardly used either. Maybe I should get a 50 Lux ASPH. Hmmm... 50L + 85L = about 2/3 price of 50 Lux...

Gregory: I really like etherial feeling of #2, the closeup of the side of the truck. I hear you about trying to catch up on PP. If I'm out shooting one full day, I'll likely be in front of the computer the next two. If I don't keep on top of it, it will grow into a mountain of work. That's pretty much where I'm at.... if there isn't anything recent waiting, there's definitely a lot of older stuff in need of attention.

The last week or so I've been catching up on pre-M9 work, meaning processing Canon 1D series files of various vintages. These now feel somewhat foreign to me. It's probably been discussed but a big difference is highlight recovery. In LR with M9 files I'm not all that happy about the look of highlight recovery, and it's limited in reach, but with Mark III or IV files there seems to be more available to pull back into range. This definitely reinforces the basic M9 rule to avoid overexposure. In fact I'm a bit surprised at how 'hot' I often shot with the Canons. There's probably also a difference due to CMOS vs CCD. I find the M9 picks up ruddy skin tone a lot more dramatically than the Canons. It's a bit of a challenge with people photos to get what I expect. It might be LR, but the Canon files have less contrast. It could be the way Canon prefers it. In this respect I also miss using DPP to an extent. It was easier to deal with shadow, mid, or highlight tone color biases, etc. by being able to manipulate the R, G and B curves individually. DPP also provides the option to adjust curves strictly for luminance without affecting colour. But I doubt I will go back to DPP. I favour the all in one workflow of LR too much now. Charles, it seems we've crossed paths in PP workflow. What you described was similar to what I did after converting from DPP, with numerous custom, pre-made actions pieced together over the years. I think it's good to know how to do all that in PS manually. It gives you a better understanding of how to achieve certain results. Using LR now, I'm slightly concerned that I'll slowly forget much of what I learned in PS. But the tradeoff has been an increase in production volume. I also don't procrastinate doing PP as much as in the past because I know I can get it done faster...

Luka: nice work! I too find myself visiting the same place again and again. While it might be the same, the weather, seasons and light provide enough variety to usually find something 'new'. It seems to me that the look of the film scans suits the subject matter quite well. Same with the digital and the reflecting pool.

Heinz: looking forward to more from the CV 50 1.5. I don't think there has been much from it posted here.

Joe: that's impressive resolution and flare control. Was the photographer with you?

Ryan: Agreed that the most recent image has very nice bokeh feel! It will be interesting to see how the 50 Planar compares.

Thanks Luka, Charles

Luka, very nice film shots. I prefer the Ektar on this set. The 28Cron set with the M9 is also excellent. #3 is my favorite.

Ryan, would be interesting to see some comparisons of the 50Cron and the Planar.

Heinz, congrats on your lens! BTW, excellent film shots on the Zeiss thread. Really nice work there.

Gregory, another cool set! Like the variety of your shooting style.

LL, I think you still need the 35Lux ASPH FLE, 90 Cron AA at minimum to reach status quo

Charles, loving your new color pp, different from the previous look and has some film feel to it First portrait is really excellent! Interesting shot with the 35Lux FLE. Are you using the 35 Lux more often than the 50Lux now?

Ron, you NEED the 50Lux ASPH Another very nice sunset shot! No, the photographer was not with me. Actually I didn't know what subjects were in the pic until I zoomed-in during post. What a lens!

Joe, thanks a lot The 35 Lux FLE, is a great lens, and if head out with a single lens, it is usually is the 35 Lux. The 50 Lux, I consider more of a people lens, particularly at f/1.4.
Yes, I agree too, Ron needs the 50 Lux Asph

Thanks Luka, Charles

Luka - I really like #3 of your Ektar shots posted on the previous page. Great colors, love the look. That is the look of film that I really like, don't know what it is, just know I like it . I immediately knew that was the 28 Cron . I also very much like your 3rd shot from the reflection pool. Great composition. I see you using the 28 Cron a lot, is that your favorite of the bunch? Getting more comfortable with the length? Sure looks like

Morfeus - congrats on the lens, glad you like it. I think that is the closest I have seen you shoot so far

Gregory - nice shots with the Noct. I really like the rendering of the dog, looks great

LL - you now have a couple cool lenses. I don't know that I would want to have the Noct if I was only having a couple lenses....its huge. The 50 Lux ASPH looks like the perfect 'compromise' . I still want to see more shots of the 24 f/1.4. What is with the writing on the bottles?

Charles - your portraits have been absolutely stunning lately due to your pp. Great job. The portraits on the prior page are so sharp where they should be (eyelashes, eyebrows, etc) yet so creamy in the oof region

Ron - really nice evening shot! Great timing. What beautiful area that is.

Another 50 Cron series

A few comments from Luka made me curious what IQ one can expect from 135 film in our days. I had never thought about it nor have I really checked or made any comparison. I know what I can get from medium format, but 24 x 36?

Anyhow, had 3 or 4 frames left on a roll in my M2 a couple of days ago and did something that I am not used to at all: nightshoots. I only had a very crappy tripod at hand and it was quite windy. I expected nothing and gave it a try.

Lens was my 50 years old Elmar 90mm f/4, film was Ektar 100, aperture at 8, exposure time 30 seconds. Scanned with Minolta Dimage Scan Multi Pro at 4800 dpi. Any automatic settings where turned of, no ROC, automatic exposure correction, USM et al. Scanned as 16bit tiff, converted to DNG. White balance and exposure (-1) corrected, moderate adjustment of curves. Sharpening and luminance smoothing set to 0. No other PP at all.

The resulting file is 30,4 MP, 6631 x 4415 px at 300dpi. The crop is pretty extreme, 319 x 198px, which is approximately 0,22% of the area of the original file. Export to flickr via LR with output sharpening set to "none".

Sorry for the boring image.

I do not want to comment on the result, but like to hear what you say.

Heinz
