Have you heard of NiZn (Nickel-Zinc) batteries? These rechargeable AA batteries are suppose to have 1.6V and about 2500mAH. I am wondering if they are any good.

What will you use them in? Flash? Does it matter that they are 1.6v instead of the usual 1.2v?

standard alkaline cells are nominally 1.5vdc, NiMh are 1.2vdc. most alkaline cells start off at 1.55-1.60vdc out of the package.

i will use them in my SB flash units along with a few other items

Interesting. Is there any downside to them? I don't suppose they stay charged like the newer low-discharge NiMHs do?

I have not seen Ni-Zn batteries in many years and not in consumer use. Has some new technology solved the shorting problem? A high current was sometimes necessary to start the recharge if they were allowed to discharge completely. After NiMH became popular we lost interest.

i'll let you know if it blows up in my face or melts my flash. yes they are supposed to hold there charge.

How do you interpret this statement?

Shelf life: PowerGenix batteries last for one year if batteries are stored at room temperature outside of an application or inside of the charger.

I'm still regularly using a bunch of Maha Powerex rechargeables in my speedlites that are at least three years old and probably more like four or five.

Regarding self-discharge, they say this:

The self-discharge rate is the natural loss of battery power or energy capacity when the battery is standing idle and not in use. PowerGenix batteries have a self-discharge rate equal of approximately 8 percent per month at room temperature. This is comparable to other rechargeable batteries.

I've never heard of these before but am very intrigued as I use CP-E3 battery packs and would be interested in the possibility of these NiZn batteries out-performing NiMH's. I did a quick 'Google' check on NiZn's and found this 'Wiki' article that states the following, "Nickel Zinc cells have an open circuit voltage of 1.8 volts when fully charged [5] and a nominal voltage of 1.6V"...my concern (assuming this information is correct) is over-voltage (especially when used in the high-voltage port). I also found a B&H link, so I hope that is a sign of confidence in the product.

This review is from: PowerGenix ZRPGX-AA8 AA 1.6v 2500 mWh ZiNc High-Voltage Rechargeable Batteries -8 Pack (Green) (Electronics)
The product description of PowerGenix Nickel-Zinc Rechargeable AA cell promises many advantages over other rechargeable batteries: higher voltage, higher energy density, lighter weight, longer cycle life, and so on. But how does it stack up against the current gold-standard of low-self-discharge NiMH cell, the Sanyo Eneloop? Let's examine the following aspects:

[Operating Voltage]
The NiZn cell has a nominal voltage of 1.65V, which is 30% higher than that of a NiMH cell (1.25V

I will not be an early adopter. The limiting factor initially is the single brand of cells and lack of chargers other than the one supplied by the manufacturer.

2500mWh Nobody else uses WH units for standard sized cells. What a sneaky way to obfuscate and hide the lower capacity.

i usually pick up on that sort of thing. age is taking its toll. it may turn out i was wrong about my RRS tripod so a may have to offload that too.

I use them, they run down incredibly fast, far too fast. I get between 200 and 40 (!) shots per set depending on how fast they are shot. I went through a fully charged set, 60 shots in 20 minutes and they were dead and incidentally almost melted my flash in the process they were so hot! Others have reported that they don't have this problem, I have 3 sets which are exactly the same, perhaps the charger is duff? Point is though the charger ain't your favorite Maha pro charger..

But they do recycle fast, very very fast. Fast enough that I'll put up with it at least for the first part of a wedding so that I can leave the battery pack in the bag.

Just checked, last wedding I got 207 frames before they died on me.

NiZn is the future of electric cars, that what I've read in MotorTrend mag.
