p.1 #1 · Photography is like prostitution

Yep, it sure is.

First you do it to please yourself

Then you do it to please others

Then you do it for money.

Then you finally reach a place where you stop only doing photography for others and "do it to please yourself".

In the sex worker industry, that's also known as becoming "damaged goods."

In a way, it's worse to be a photographer--you get irresistible urges to buy expensive gear.

Well, a lot of photographers do sell their services to fund their LBGB addiction. Lens, body, and gear buyers addictions that is...

<raises hand> Hi, my name is Steve and I'm a camera addict...

But you should separate what you do for $$$ and what you do for yourself and what you do for yourself should always come from an honest place and having nothing to do with anything but how you see the world.
Here what the great Edward Weston had to say about the subject and I couldn't agree more. My commercial work and I define commercial as amy means to make money with your photography., pays the mortgage, feeds the family, pays for the gear, sends the kids through school, and most important gives me a base to do my own work which helps me stay relatively sane.

Well heres what Weston said.

"When money enters in, - then, for a price, I become a liar, - and a good one I can be whether with pencil or subtle lighting or viewpoint. I hate it all, but so do I support not only my family, but my own work."
Edward Weston

In my quotations file, I have this attributed to Philippe Halsman:
"I drifted into photography like one drifts into prostitution. First I did it to please myself, then I did it to please my friends, and eventually I did it for the money."

The what-the-duck cartoons are always good for a laugh.
Best,
Andy

Thats why in my opinion its important to have personal work. Something art directors and clients can't have a hand in. Can't influence the vision.

Q) What's the difference between a large pizza and a pro photographer?

A) A large pizza can feed a family of four.
