To be exact, it's the combo of astigmatism and coma. Almost every fast wide angle will exhibit this phenomena. This 35 v1 is one of my early Leica lenses. Leica put a lot of effort on it, since it was designed for the newly announced R series at that time. This 35 v1 has 9 elements, much more than the 2nd version (6 elements). Performance will still match current primes from other manufacturers.
johnahill, I like the mood in your 28 shot
Grenache, very interesting Macro set
I have a question to you R-lens people:
is there just one APO 2x extender? I want to get one for a 280/4. Some on offer say that they are for the 280/2.8. Will these fit the 4.0 as well?
Can anyone tell me what Leitax mount it needs, (how many screws), so I can order it already?

Optically there's only one version of the 2x APO-Extender-R (likewise one version of the 1.4x APO-Extender-R). The 2x APO was made in both ROM and non-ROM mounts. There was also a non-APO 2x extender which is much older and did not impress me.
The 1.4x APO-Extender-R was orginally made for the 280mm f/2.8 APO, which is why many 1.4x APO-Extenders are marked "FOR R 2.8/280". It works perfectly well with the 280mm f/4 APO and some other lenses too.
Jim the 100 APO shots look amazing, I love the second one especially. Great combination of contrast, soft out of focus rendering and sharp details in focus.
Has anyone had any experience with Leica R Elmarit 16mm F2.8 lens? I'm contemplating getting this lens, so would be grateful to hear some folks' opinions about it.
Also the one I'm looking at now has a serial number start from 281. But it has a coating mark (dot shaped about half a mm across) in the centre of the rear element. The guy selling it said it won't affect the image quality. I thought I'd seek some pros opinion on this.
Many thanks in advance!

No personal experience but are you aware that it's a re-branded and QC'd Minolta lens? Depending on what camera you'd use it on you might save some coin on a Minolta model.

All marks affect image quality, the only question is how visible it is. If only the coating is missing and there is zero damage to the glass or neighbouring coating in the area, then the effect might not be visible in most images, possibly excepting when very bright light shines through, in which case there could be some more flare, and possibly even an "image" somewhere of the area's shape.
If there is more damage, then it will be visible sooner, and more.

coating marks, particularly on the rear element are usually visible in any oof highlight disks (as are larger bits of dust), though you might be hard pressed to get bokeh discs with a 16/2.8.
