Thanks Vern
I like your shot too. I did a quick (informal) test, and found there is not much difference in IQ from f/4 to f/11 where diffraction creeps in. It reminds me of my old Sumicron R 35mm.
For my taste oversharpened at the end of process. Look at the letters. That is too much I believe.
I always sharpen in post but the letters aren't sharpened. I only do local sharpening with a brush. At web sizes you can't judge sharpness - but the original RAW file is very sharp from corner to corner. (You'll just have to believe me on that one)

- that's the exact testing I did yesterday with the same results. f/11 was better than I expected.
All I can say is OMG. Even though it's zoom I see the IQ near or similar to Canon EF 300/2.8 in terms of sharpness and surpassing it in contrast and colors. But this beast is also almost as heavy, although much smaller.
Thanks jhp, the 35 sumicron has gotten more use than anything in my bag for the last 3 years. I was hoping i might get a comment on #3. (no-one liked it but me) I havent used the 50 nearly as much but i did use it some for a wedding this summer.
Jpeter, I like the contrast in pic 3, but I think that the composition of the photo is a bit off (the person in the picture seems to be growing blurry trees from his head)... this, in my opinion, makes it lose some of its pop. Of course, this is from looking at a web image, and not the original...
btw, what camera are you using your leica lenses on? (I have a summicron 35 but I can't get my 5D2 to focus it properly: may have to convert it to eos mount using leitax)
amade - I didn't see the antlers till you mentioned it. Thanks for ruining it for me
I am using a 5dii, and had a 5d. What do you mean can't focus it properly ? Without a matte style focus screen, It just won't focus well. get an s style or aftermarket. Also the screen must be shimmed properly to work. You might get lucky but do a tripod fucus test at f2 using a ruler in the plane away from the camera. this is to dtect front or back focus. I use fotodiox pro adapters, they all get infinity focus dead on. This is usually the adapter issue. I also bought some smart chips and glued them into my fotodiox adapters for focus confirm. All this is written about on this forum elsewhere,
sorry! shoudl have been clearer.
I have noticed that the summicron 35 is extremely sensible to the thickness of the adapter. I am still looking for one that will allow me infinity focus (not even hyperfocal gives me sharp infinity). I still need to try the leitax R-Eos conversion.
all my focusing is using live view (that is why I know I can't get infinity).
maybe crop the image a bit more , so that the 'antlers' are uniformly in the back
Amande - I believe that any lens that doesn't allow focus past infinity will be equally sensitive to adapter width. You just need an adapter thats the correct thickness, it doesn't have to be fancy. I would rate the fotodiox pro models at about 8 on a 1 to 10 scale. they hit infinity focus, but one of mine is a touch loose, (i can see the image shift in the vf when i turn the aperture ring.) I have not had good luck with their focus confirm adapters.
Hello everybody, my first post in this forum. My name is Stefan, I am from Bonn in Germany and shoot with a Canon 5D Mark2.
Excellent Thread! The images on the first page from Steve Spencer forced me to buy a 90mm Summicron and an Elpro3 . A 35 Summi and a 50 Summi I already had bought recently before.
Now after reading for some time in this thread it's time to some images. I went this evening to the christmas market of Bonn and took some shots with the 90 Summi and the 35 Summi. Aperture was mostly set to 2.8. Is it allowed to link to flash galleries? Street photography with leica lenses at Bonn
Amade: I tried three adapters: Each I had to grind a bit. The least amount was with the programmable one from Minsk. There it was only necessary to cut the inner egde.
jph1: Stunning shot, that 3D impression is inbelievable!
