JJ, Nice set to show 80lux. it is on my shopping list. I wonder any one can comment compare this one to ZF planar 85 or even Nikon, Canon fast 85mm. I had ZF and love it.
Most 85mm 1.4 lens render similar to my eyes. Is there anything special about this 80lux? Is it sharp compare to ZF or ZE 85?
Try at least post a pic
50lux R WO (this lens has outstanding WO performance to my eyes)

Michael, the 80 Summilux R is close related to 75 Summilux M. While it is not very sharp WO, it has a very smooth rendering characters. Stepping down a bit to 2.8, it's extremely sharp yet still retain the smoothness. It can be used as specialty lens WO as well as short tele lens when stepping down. I like it better than both Nikon 85/1.4 AIS and 85/1.4D lenses. I have not used the latest 80/1.4 AFS-G lens, nor the Zeiss ZF 85/1.4. Among all the 85/1.4 lenses that I used, I found the Sony/Zeiss 85/1.4 ZA lens has the best WO performance.

Hummm. I beg to disagree, the Lux R 80 is very different to the Lux M 75.
The simple fact that the Lux 75 is an APO gives a completely different render!
The Lux 80 has more character and is simply a better lens.
- Michael.
1- As for the difference between the ZF2 85 and the Lux 80. They are opposites in rendering profiles.
The Lux 80 WO has some ethereal glowing qualities, while the ZF2 85 is simply an 85 lens with higher contrast.
As for sharpness, there is no lens with an aperture of f1.4 which is sharp centre and corners.
The Lux 80 is a bit of a dual personality lens as it is very different WO from stopped down where it is very sharp.
You really need to have shots of both lenses side by side WO and stopped down to tell the difference.
Whenever I get the time, I will try to take a "so called" test shots with the Lux 80 - ZF2 85 - 85/1.4G - 85/1.8G - Contax 85/1.2 - Biotar 75/1.5.
This has been on my list for sometime (before the launch of the 85/1.8G) and unfortunately the lenses are all over the place and not in the same house.
Almass, perhaps you mean that 80 Summilux-R and 75 Summicron-M ASPH/APO are very different. 75 Summilux is not an APO lens and if you look into the optical diagrams of the 80 Summilux-R and 75 Summilux-M, they are almost identical!

If you want to do a resolution test then don't do it on cars that are shaking them selves to pieces. But WTF. I normally use the R80 at F2 in this kind of situation so I don't have many wide open.
It's worth noting that the dof is so narrow in all of these that without shooting a flat surface, and square to the sensor/film, parts of the image will always look OOF somewhere. There's only a tiny bit that's ever properly in focus and everything else is less so until it's clearly OOF. The registration label on the van is an example. You can almost read it because it's pretty much square to the sensor and actually in focus.

I have no idea if it is "special". I suppose it depends on what a person wants, but I've had a few decent fast 80-85's and have kept this one.
By the way sharpness is not the main or defining quality of this lens although I don't think it's lacking in any way either. It's certainly exceedingly sharp stopped down but so are some $15 enlarging lenses. If you want the sharpest wide open then maybe the FD 85/1.2 SSC Ashperical, 85L or similar Canon lenses will be best.
Here are a couple from this morning, shot with the 35mm Summicron at f2.5. In a case like this the field curvature actually helps get more of the players in focus since they are not on the same plane.
I am still doing investigation about this lens at the same time waiting for some nice copy show up patiently. I am not very into sharpness but it has to meet my not so high threshold. (Planar 50 is not there)
your samples definitely shows its WO performance is enough for me. I also looks around samples from it. It looks pretty good.
ZF 85 is a very good lens. I'd love to keep it if its focus ring turn the other way. I don't have single complain about it. Maybe 1M MFD. WO is very sharp and slow down is close to MP100 performance.
Robsteve, nice samples! the more I use this 35cron the more I love it. It is formally my favorite 35mm lens now.
Leica lens focus fade off is very gentle compare to Zeiss, so it is a lot tolerant to focus error than Zeiss. I did quite a lot of focus by eye quickly with moving kids and my rate is surprisingly good. No AF will compete something like that.
So guys, don't buy lens based on MTF or online review, try it yourself to find your campaign
I will post more samples later from 35cron and 50lux.
Playing around with the 400mm APO-Telyt with and without a Nikon AF 1.6 converter on the D800E.
The first picture of the Mallard is manual focus, 400mm f2.8. The first picture is also a crop of about 2/3 the frame, while the second is full frame. The second is AF with manual assist, as you need to get the lens focused manually at least close to the range the AF converter can correct for. This was effectively a 640mm f4.5.
