it could have an aftermarket plain ground glass screen or something
if you look at the link below it has an image of what the VF should look like (I know its the 1Ds3 but it should be near the same) http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/CanonEOS1DSMarkIII/page4.asp
And yes as for over/underexpossure the metering is calibrated to the screen. you have a menu option for each screen. The meter (i think) is above the focusing screen. so if the screen lets more/less light thru than the meter thinks it will over/under expose

Would this explain why a lot of my shots seem to be overexposing.
It might. In the menu system (CF IV-11) there is a setting for the focusing screen. If the user changed the screen and did not adjust the setting the camera metering can be off.

That's a really dirty mirror chamber. Must be plenty of dust bunnies on your focusing screen.
Like others have said, without the focusing screen, your VF wouldn't work. You'd see light and inside the camera, but no clear image from the lens.
are you sure about that? I just flpped the screen out of my 40D and you still get an image in the VF. its not quite as sharp and the corners darken but you can still clearly see what your aiming at.
Now the 1d3 may be different as on the 40D screen there are no markings as they are on a screen above the focus screen.
I think the OP mentioned in another thread that his 1d3 VF was much worse than his 7D. Having looked thru the 40D without screen its much worse than with (obvious) . its more like looking thru a keyhole . it reminds me of the VF on the 350D
Also I checed the mettering with and without.
Without I was getting a reading (plain wall) of 1/4th at f4 but with it was 1/13th at f4
Well guys i took it to 2 camera stores and they both confirmed there is no focussing screen. seeing this was listed as being in perfect condition I am quite alarmed that the seller can overlook something like this.
needless to say I have just opened a dispute in order to get a refund on the basis the camera was not as described due to missing parts.

You might just drop the seller a line. The screens are $30 or so and take about 30 seconds to swap. Perhaps the seller got a 1dmk4 and swapped the screen to the new camera and forgot to drop the old one back in your camera. I would not let a small issue like this prevent me from buying a clean camera.
I'll bet he had a different screen like an Ec-S or some aftermarket screen in it an took it out to sell it while forgetting to put the original back in.
