p.1 #1 · Good lens for Nikon d200?

This is my first post on FM, so hello everybody. I am new to the world of DSLR's, but have been shooting a lot with my little point and shoot camera. I have talked to a professional photographer and he said the best thing to do is to buy a used nikon d200 and just start shooting with it. My only question is what lens should i start off with? (I am on a relatively low budget)

I intend on buying a 50mm 1.8D but am also in need of a low power zoom with the versatility of a f2.8 aperture. I have found the 24-85mm 2.8-4D and the 35-70mm 2.8. For those of you that have these lenses, can you tell me which one you like more and why?

Welcome to FM, I'm sure you'll find the community useful.

A couple of observations: A D200 is a still very good pro camera. However, it really shows its age at ISO of 800 and higher. The D5000 or D90 deliver much better ISO 1600 and up than the D200. Depending on how you shoot, a D5000 or D90 may be a better choice than a D200.

Also, most folks here agree that the best way to get f2.8 (EDIT: add "cheap" here) in a standard zoom for a DX camera like the D200, D5000, or D90 is Tamron's 17-50 2.8. The version that doesn't have stabilization goes for under $500 new, and gives you useful moderate wide angle to short telephoto coverage.

The Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 DX is an amazing lens too. Similar to a 28-70mm on a crop sensor, but more expensive too.

What exactly do you mean be low power zoom? DO you mean that you need a zoom with a wide angle of view? If so be advised that the 35-70 is a full frame lens and you are shooting with a crop camera. Thus it will not be a wide angle lens for you on a D200.

The 24-85 is a variable aperture lens and does not have the f2/8 aperture at the long end. Also 24mm is not that wide on a crop camera.

Without knowing much about what you take pictures of I'd recommend the 16-85mm.

[edit] I like Doug's Tamron recommendation as well.

When i say low power zoom i mean like a general kit lens but maybe with a little more focal length but with the f/2.8 aperture. The 17-55mm 2.8 sounds like a nice lens, but its out of my price range. The Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 sounds good, i think i'll take a look at it.

Thanks for the recommendations.

When you are ready to go a little longer, the Tokina 50-135 f2.8 goes about 600 bucks. The Nikon 55-200VR goes for a quarter of that, but is not f2.8 Either is a very good lens.

I was looking through some of my dad's old film gear and found a Nikkor AF 35-80mm f/4-5.6D lens. Would this lens work on a D200?

First off, welcome to the FM Nikon board!

I would disagree that the D200 is the best place to start off... having owned that camera, and a D90 as well, I'd say that you're better off in many ways with the more forgiving low-light performance of the newer D90. The D200 is built tough-as-nails, and is very responsive, but the D90 is also a professionally capable camera, and you're not losing many significant features vs. the D200.

The only thing I would miss going from a D200 to a D90 would be the light metering capabilities with classic manual focus lenses.

Assuming that you're starting with a D90, and are looking at a low-power f/2.8 capable zoom lens (I assume low-power means wide-angle-to-slightly-telephoto), I would say that you're looking at the wrong lenses. All of those lenses are good pieces of glass, but you're gonna be backed into a corner (literally and figuratively) if you ever need to shoot nearby subjects in a cramped space. On DX cameras, 35mm is roughly what your eye sees. 24mm is marginally wider, but not significantly so. 16-18mm is what I would consider the beginnings of "wide angle" focal lengths on these cameras.

For a more versatile kit, you should have coverage of the wide end, and coverage of the short telephoto end (which the 50mm f/1.8 will take care of very well). As others have suggested, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 is a great lens! I owned one for about a year and a half. It's almost as good as the triple-the-price Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 AFS, which I also own.

Alternately, the 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 is a VERY good deal for the money. It is just as sharp as my 17-55/2.8 AFS, at only a slight decrease in light intake (f/3.5 vs f/2.8 on the wide end, and f/4.5 vs. f/2.8 on the long end... 1/2 stop difference on the wide end, and 1 stop difference on the long end roughly). I used an 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 on my D90 for professional shooting for about a year as I had little need for f/2.8 in that focal range.

Among the lenses you're considering in your first post, the 35-70mm f/2.8 is fantastic, but it will leave you lacking any wide-angle capability. The 24-85mm f/2.8-4 isn't very good at f/2.8, though it is reasonably sharp at f/4-5.6... but if you have to stop down to f/4-5.6, it's not an f/2.8 lens, right?

My advice to you is this: Instead of a D200 and less practical lenses, get a D90, 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 AFS, 50mm f/1.8, and SB-600 flash... or get a D90, Tamron 17-50/2.8 version 1, SB-600 flash, and skip the 50mm f/1.8.

Either setup will run you roughly $1200, which is about what a good condition D200 + 35-70/2.8 + 50mm f/1.8 will cost (approximately $1100-1200), but with the addition of a flash, more flexible glass, and with better low light performance.

I was looking through some of my dad's old film gear and found a Nikkor AF 35-80mm f/4-5.6D lens. Would this lens work on a D200?

The 35-80mm f/4-5.6 lens will mount on any Nikon DSLR, and it will meter on all of the DSLRs, but no auto focus on the D40/40x/60/3000/5000. It's an OK lens, but very poor light intake, and kinda soft wide-open.

Happy shooting!
-J

For the most part, i dont think i will be shooting in low-light conditions and i know a guy who can sell me a D200+18-70+50mm for around $800. It will cost alot more to get a D90 body+the other two lenses, atleast $1200-$1300. At the moment i only have that $800 so the D200 looks like a greater possibility. Im only a teenager so it could take a while to make that extra $400-$500. All of the photographers i have talked to said its a fine camera so i think ill go with the D200+18-70mm+50mm.

Very well then. I still love my 18-70, and haven't had the heart to replace it as my upscale standard zoom with the likes of a 16-85 VR or 17-50 2.8. I still use my 18-70 quite a bit, and it is still very good outdoors in good light. Pick up a flash ASAP, even if it is just an SB-400, to help overcome the high ISO limitations of your D200.

The D200 is a great camera. There are more important things in life than high ISO, and the ergonomics and AF is vastly better on the D200 than the D90. I know. I have a D80 (identical to the D90 but with the D200 sensor) and an S5 (identical to the D200 but with a Fuji sensor). The D200 will also last longer.

Tamron 17-50 is a must have. Best value for money anywhere and a great lens for everyday use. For longer needs, I would buy a Tokina 50-135mm f/2.8 or a Nikkor 70-300 AF-S VR (or both). A 85mm f/1.8 is nice for portraits, and they can be found very cheap second hand.

Totally agree. I have a D200 and D300 and enjoy both. The D200 is an amazing camera, especially for the price when you consider the build, AF etc. And if you do happen to shoot at high ISO and have a bit of noise, any decent noise reduction software, including the one included in Lightroom 3 (in beta now) will take care of it just fine. To me, that is a much better option than shelling out the extra dollars for a D90 which will give you about 1 more stop of noise handling but a far inferior body, AF system etc.

Definitely go w/ the D200 and 18-70. It's a great combo that will serve you well.

good luck,

jeff

Yes
My advice is use your Dad's lens for 2-3 weeks - and only then consider other lenses.
The pro you mentioned in your first post had an advantage over us - he knew you were young, on a very limited budget, but (most important) keen.
A second hand D200 is as good as it gets on a budget, and your Dads old zoom comes free.

The D200 is a wonderful camera I am still using...
the 18-70 has been my favorite for a long time (sold in the meantime)
the 17-50 2.8 is now my high quality choice
the 18-200VR is my all round choice
the 35 1.8 is my low light choice
and I have used the 35-70 2.8 for some time for portraiture, but the focal range was not my favorite and I stopped using it.

The D200 is a steal at current prices. Still a very capable camera.

Go with the Tokina 50-135 for the price it is hard to beat. I have the Fuji S5 which is built on the D200 body but this lens is incredible for the price. I would also recommend the 18-105VR great lens although not a 2.8. Your best option is to move to the right side a Canon 40D

Thanks Gugs.

Internet forums have a way have creating an alternate reality whereby if you don't have the latest and greatest gear then you are in some way handicapped. I have be guilty of this also. I am sure the OP will enjoy a D200.
