Oh well

It's going to be funny when something like this rangefinder shows up at Photokina later this year.

He writes, "The amount of traffic and discussion that has been generated by my attempt at a joke has pricked the conscience of two big players in the camera market that I know of. "

I'm not exactly sure what he means by this. But if it means that these "2 big players" have noticed all the interest in this and started thinking about it, that can only be a good thing. Maybe they've read all the posts and come away with some good ideas (like that fabulous, super-fast, magnesium matrix shutter!!). Maybe someone will be reminded about all the cutting edge technology sitting on the shelf in the still-born Contax G3...

That's assuming they had the idea quite a while ago. Unless you're referring to a non-working prototype (a la Sony).

The Canon 5D was announced August 22, 2005 and 5D Mark II on September 17, 2008. 3 years apart.

Developing a whole new system (unless you want huge EOS lenses and essentially full time live-view with slow AF) is going to take a lot longer.

If they're just starting to develop such a camera we likely won't see a working camera until the official announcement (Canon don't tend to show prototypes) in a few years.

Given the Nikon rumours I'd assume they've had a camera in development for quite a while. I'm also willing to bet it is an ILC camera, with optional electronic viewfinder. Not for me thanks.

Both Canon and Nikon will do it eventually, but with an EVF.

Samsung is working on it. Sony is probably going to release one next year, we will know for sure when the APC-C models are out as it would be easy to check if the glass can cover an FF sensor.

...and Photokina will be the venue to announce for whichever manufacturer has one in the works. I have no doubt someone has been working on one for a while.

Wow, he is really funny. Too bad I don't have a sense of humor to appreciate his wit. I mean, an industry insider telling everyone that he is testing a new camera, then making fun of the people that believe him. Forget Monty Python, that is really hilarious. Oh, and I should be thankful by the way, because his prank has caused Canon to take notice. Indeed, thank you Jeff.

I had no clue who he was before, now I could care less. He may take good photographs but he is obviously a tool.

I don't see him as making fun of the people that believed him. But I do agree that Canon taking notice was certainly productive.

Well, we know who hasn't eaten their oats in a little while.

Some quality sarcasm, a bit of wit, and a good poke at the consumer's desires: how isn't that an above average April fools joke?

If Canon, Nikon, Sony, or some phoenix rising from the ashes took notice, that makes it even more excellent.
