p.1 #1 · Sigma 80-400

Hi all you canon folks out there. First time I have started a topic here and I am looking for a little advice. I have read up a bit on this lens and I am just a tad confused. I have read that it might have issues on being used with an Rebel XSI which is my model. I cannot find much on weather it will or will not work. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this lens and a newish rebel body before I just put it on the body and pray nothing bad happens...

Any help you could give me or advice (other than get the canon 100-400L.) I would be very grateful for.

Z. Nelson

I have one, I have used it on a 20D, 40D, 50D and 1D mk1, sorry don't have an XSI. As for the lens itself, I also have a 100-400L and the IQ of the sigma is pretty close IMHO. The IS/OS is as good as the L, but focus speed is not.

Hi Z. Nelson,

I'd be curious to read whatever info you had found concerning Rebel-compatibility issues with this lens, perhaps you can post a link?

I am in complete agreement with sbacchus' assessment of this oft-overlooked gem...I've been using one for a few years on my 30D, and have lately begun to experiment with it on the 5D2. Because of the focusing speed, you'll definitely need to work with this lens for fast moving targets, like BIFs, IMHO (though I've used it for that) but for daylight images where you can use some reach it'll do the job nicely.

Besides the various online reviews, you might want to check out...

...for a good sampling of some of the results folks are getting with this lens.

I hope this was helpful!

Peace,
Jimmy G

Read the lens reviews here on FM.

I have had this lens and while it is reasonably sharp & the OS works OK, it has a well known "shutter-stutter" behaviour. This can happen most often in multi-shot but have noticed delay on quick successive single shot. It occasionally would result in an error being displayed. I was always able to clear it AND was able to get decent shots if I was patient. But the shutter delay issue can spoil wildlife or sports shooting opportunities.

There was some speculation that is was a power requirement. I think it more likely a lens communication issue when the OS & AF are busy, too busy.

YMMV
Dan

Well the Lens I was going to buy , thankfully it was someone I know who let me try it today, Does not work well at all with my xsi, the camera locks up and i have to shut it off. It is an older model of the 80-400 apparently and it is out of production as far as i can tell. Now I have to search for a new xxx-400mm lens in my price range.
