p.1 #1 · mf-26 questions

Hey guys,

I recently acquired two film cameras in a lens deal. I only shoot the occasional roll of film so I probably won't keep both of these bodies. Can't decide which to keep.

1. N90 / F90
2. N90s / F90x with the MF-26 multi control back.

I've been reading the enclosed manual(s) and can't really find much reason to have this MF-26 back. The data imprinting on the images if obviously out, I've had point and shoots that did this in the past and wanted to punt it into a lake when I accidentally turned this 'feature' on. Some of the extra flash and exposure lock functionality provided by the MF-26 could be handy in certain situations. In the digital age I also think that I would just use my D300 for special shots like long exposures or use of the intervalometer. Obviously bracketing is a bonus with the mf-26.

My questions are directed at those of you that have or have had this set up. Is there any practical way to get the shooting data from the data back? I'd like to be able to refer back to the shutter speed / aperture information, essentially exif, at a later date.

It is my understanding that the data imprinting is only done on the image (yuck!) unlike the F5 back which imprints this data between frames. Even the frame zero option doesn't sound very good with the MF-26 (I'd like to just see it imprint all shots info just before film rewind onto frame 37 or 0 but I guess they weren't up to this challenge way back in 1996). If there is any way to get this info from the back to the PC please let me know (I don't have the Sharp brand organizer that I've seen mentioned lol). It just seems frustrating that the data is there with no real way of using it.

Worth a shot posting here. Any help that anyone can provide would be appreciated. I'm thinking that I might just end up selling the N90s & MF-26 and just shoot with the 'basic' N90.

thanks in advance,

The N90s is a much better camera than the N90, in terms of features, AF and other little bits and pieces. You might be able to use an adapter for the 10 pin input to download the data to a CF card (I know this works for the f5, f6, f100) but the thing costs an arm and a leg. If it were me, I'd keep the N90s as it does have advantages over the N90. But for most bang for buck $$wise, you'll get a lot more for the N90s with the data back.

Thanks for the reply,

The fact that I could get more $ for the N90s while the N90 would still take nice pictures with the N90 was what I was thinking. It isn't going to be my primary body, after all. The thing that keeps me thinking I'll want the data back is the fact that the shooting info is recorded, just need a way to get it.

I haven't been able to find the adapter for this info ( I did find one DIY cable that was 10 pin to Computer {15 pin}). I will keep looking.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&Q=&IC=NIMV1&A=RetrieveSku

that is what works with the F6, f5 and f100 - don't know if it would work with the N90

Here's a list of the differences in the n90 vs the n90s.
