OK have the 16-35 in the hand, here are a couple quick observations
size and appearance are inviting as a lighter, more consumer grade lens, the image quality however is contrary.
Interesting observation. First thing I did when I received mine was pick up the 17-35 in one hand and the 16-35 in the other. Other than the 16-35 being a little longer, it felt like I was holding a 17-35 in both hands. Both feel solid.
I got a bit too exited about this lens...
I shoot a lot with the 60mm micro, I use it to do portraits and candids.
The 60mm micro is probably the sharpest lens that nikon makes...and this new 16-35mm is just as sharp...!
I love it...!
sorry for those oversize images...! how can I erase them now?
OK this is far from scientific but I rented a 14-24 for a wedding back in November, I had planned to buy one this year but when the 16-35 came out I decided to go with it instead.
Here is a pic I took with the 14-24 wide open at 2.8 and as close as I could get with the 16-35 also wide open. I know this isnt apples to apples but Im pretty satisfied with my choice

Greg, I think your rented 14-24 is either broken or the corners are not in the depth of field.
The 14-24 was shot at 2.8 that may be the reason the corners do not look as sharp.
I have an image from the back of the church I used the lens at and the 14-24 is sharp corner to corner
If I knew in November that the 16-35 was comming out I would have taken some shots at f4 and 16mm but my ESP must be broke
Im really happy with the lens I could not justify $1800 for the 14-24 as I think it would see limited use as my 70-200 stays on my camera most of the time. The 16-35 will allow me very good results when needed for weddings or landscape photography.
If I get hooked on Ultra Wide stuff I may rethink it in the future
OK if you’re not tiered of samples yet here are a few more:
Although I don’t think center sharpness was in question this is a 100% crop wide open and handheld at 1/30
These next shots are the types of shots I purchased this lens for and again Im happy with the results
Am I the only one keeping this lens? The returned thread is full of complaints and comparisons with the 14-24 and 17-35 while this thread keeps sinking to the bottom.
Just wondering if Im the only on happy with this lens
