p.2 #1 · Sony 850 or Canon 5D MkII?

I have since last year in addition to my Minolta / Sony a Caon 5D Mk II and some lenses. Besides the 70..200 mm f4 IS, I'm disappointed. The 100mm f2 is far away from the Minolta 100mm f2 in color rendering and falls off completely when used with a 1.4 converter. Similar experience with 24..105mm f4 IS vs. the Zeiss 16..80mm.

Thus the large amount of Canon lenses shrink to a small amount of expensive L lenses, which double their prices with recent releases.

I took the consequence and bought the Zeiss ZE 21mm for Canon. Zeiss is what you get with Sony too, but not these specific primes.

My guess is as good as yours, but there are rumors circulating that this year will see some serious glass additions from Sony.

Totally agreed. Why do you think there are so many Canon users on the alt forum?

The cameras are good but it's the glass that is lacking. If I ever go back to Canon, it would be to be able to use the delicious ZE glass.

Because if you want to shoot full-frame, more different lens mounts are adaptable to Canon than to Nikon or Sony...

As much as I enjoy the A900, I'm tempted to add a 5Dmk2 and some Zeiss primes. The ZA 24-70 just doesn't appeal to me in the same way as the primes, altough I'm sure it rocks. Oh well. Choices choices....

Have you considered Zeiss ZS or Contax? I can vouch for the quality of Leitax replacement mounts.

Canon for sure.

Shortest flange to film distance = most adaptable lens mount. Except for Leica M/rangefinder lenses I believe you can use almost any lens that's every been made (if you get an adapter of course)

Actually, while Canon EF mount is very adaptable, it's flange-film distance is right in the middle of the pack for 35mm SLR mounts, much longer at 44mm than Konica AR's 40.5mm or Canon FD's 42mm and just slightly longer than Minolta SR (MD) mount's 43.5mm but shorter than OM's 46mm or Nikon F's 46.5mm. Adaptation possibilities are actually limited and arise as much from the large diameter of EF mount as from the flange to film distance which allows much of the adapter to be inserted inside the body mount. EF is popular for adaptation more due to the really interesting mounts being readily adaptable to it (M42, F, OM, C/Y and R) than it being able to adapt most everything.

4/3rds mount is the most adaptable of current SLR mounts (38.67mm register) and even it can't adapt some mounts (FD most notably).

Hmmm, that too, but the primary reason why Canon users switched to alternatives is because their glass sucked.

I am very tempted too, to be honest. I keep on fighting this money spending urge by reminding myself how good the 24-70 and 16-35 are. If Sony doesn't introduce a few luminous Zeiss primes soon, I'm not sure how long I can resist and I might succomb to the temptation

Edward, I know you're not a big fan of adapters, like m42 (although I've never had issue with the James Lao ones,) but you should really give Leitax a consideration for Contax lenses to mount on your A900. I was shocked at the quality of the mount, and how easy it was to replace. The A900's VF is so bright that I really don't even use stop down metering often. I just choose the aperture, focus, and shoot.

Actually it is better to select the aperture then focus. You can thus counter any focus shift with bright lenses. Did this all the time when I shot Canon/Contax.

Thank you Douglas. Totally agree. My problem is that I sold 13 cherry picked Contax lenses when I switched to Sony. I hate to go through that process again
