If there is no 60D then I am in a difficult position. I need a quality backup for my 5D2, with similar ergonomics and menu structure etc. I was planning to get a 60D as backup because, although I don't like crop much, at that price I would be getting the backup I need. Now apparently I am told I should buy the 7D. Well, here in the UK the price difference between the 7D and 5D2 bodies isn't proportionally that high. If Canon tell me I must cough up for the 7D I would be so tempted to just save a bit longer, and get a second 5D2.
So if the xxD line ends it will have the effect for me at least, of ending serious use of the crop sensor. If there is no 60D then I suspect some photographers will be effectively asked to choose between crop and FF. Not all, because I appreciate many will love the 7D autofocus and other features, but there will be a dividing effect if there is no 60D to provide an affordable semi-pro cropper.
Unless the 7D drops to xxD price levels of course, but I doubt that....Show more →
Umm, the 7D is a cropped sensor camera. The 7D is the 60D (at least the 50D replacement).
People bitched about the old fashion autofocus of the X0D series and wanted it upgraded. Then Canon came out with the 7D, and people complained how pricey it is, even though it's entry price was only a couple of hundred dollars more than the 40D/50D price entry point and has a lot more features.
The new Rebel certainly is more expensive than the Rebel XS, but you have to expect that since the T2i has a lot more features than the XS. Same thing with the 7D vs. the 50D.

The same could be said about Nikon when they didn't include 2$ coffee grinder motor in their cheap bodies. Now, 75% of their lenses are useless on them (and no, MF is NOT an option - it's the safe way to be frustrated about OOF photos). Where's the logic in that?
Except that the people that buy the D3000 want the twin lens kit, or the 18-200 only (or 11x zoom as many like to call it). They generally leave the camera in auto mode, and there's not too many buttons on the body to confuse them with.
Releasing the D3000 with a motor in the body was a good move for them, what they did wrong, was not upgrading all the lenses with AF-S to accommodate this move.
But it's not "75%" of lenses. Here is a list of Nikon lenses that won't work on a D3000.
Wide-Angle
* AF DX Fisheye-NIKKOR 10.5mm f/2.8G ED
* AF NIKKOR 14mm f/2.8D ED
* AF Fisheye-NIKKOR 16mm f/2.8D
* AF NIKKOR 20mm f/2.8D
* AF NIKKOR 24mm f/2.8D
* AF NIKKOR 28mm f/2.8D
* AF NIKKOR 35mm f/2D
Normal
* AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D
* AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4D IF
* AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8D
* AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2D
* AF DC-NIKKOR 135mm f/2D
* AF NIKKOR 180mm f/2.8D IF-ED
* AF Zoom-NIKKOR 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF
* AF Zoom-NIKKOR 80-200mm f/2.8D ED
* AF VR Zoom-NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED
* AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED
From this above I could probably pick 2 lenses that would actually be limiting to a D3000 user. The 50mm f1.8 and the 85mm f1.8 are two that would be handy, the rest are probably not something they would buy or consider or too expensive anyway.
And like I mentioned, any user falling into the "I really want to use more lens options" category has a good upgrade path to a D90.
Nevertheless, Nikon could pull their finger out and make the all AF-S (makes me want to slap a few people around at Nikon too).

I didn't bitch about the xxD AF. I love my 40D, and I'm happy with it. And the 7D is a bit much for what I need, and the t2i is no where close (namely in ergonomics and viewfinder, and probably AF). Not to mention the $800 vs $1700 pricegap for the bodies. The market is there. It's being filled by the 50D as long as canon can squeeze it for.
I agree that the market is there...the price gap between Rebel and 7D is broad...
Thinking outside of the box for a moment...a light-weight, FF, Rebel-sized, pentaprism, low-fps, ISO 6400 camera for ~$1200 US would fill that gap nicely...I mean, I'm just sayin'...

hahaha, I would definitely be tempted. I'm not sure I can deal w/ the rebel construction though. How about we just reintroduce the 5D MKI with digic4 as "6D" =)

...and trim off some weight and some size...and I think my girlfriend and my daughter would be very pleased!
It'll be hard for Canon to justify the price of a new 60D at $1400 like the 50D, when you have the 7D at $1700. I also don't know if Canon's willing to reduce the estimated retail price, and if they do reduce it, what features would the 60D have?

If they would include the electronic level that's on the 7D, live view, and price it in the same ballpark as the 7D, I'd definitely be in.

The '60D' will likely go for around $1300 if one is released. That is still a $400 price difference between it and the 7D, which is plenty large enough for most people in that market to stick with the '60D'. It will most likely have the same sensor as the 550D along with all of its fluff features plus the addition of the 50D's VF, AF, FPS and ergonomics and the 7D's battery. Although I've got to say I'm loosing hope in a 60D release given the amount of time that has elapsed.

Not sure why you'd put the 5D under the 7D.
The 5Dmk2 is more expensive, and way more refined in terms of IQ.
The 7D adds toys, and better AF+burst speed, the last 2 are great, but theres still quite a way to go.
If you look you'll see 'xD' placed directly above the '5D'. I believe he was comparing market segments rather than specs (correct me if I'm wrong). Another way to post it:
xD (FF, 19pt AF)
5D (FF, 9pt AF)
7D (APS-C, 19pt AF)
xxD (APS-C, 9pt AF)
I don't necessarily agree with it since I think the 5DIII will be the 'xD'.

That sounds reasonable but would it be enough to entice people wanting to upgrade from the Rebels or older x0D body if it still only have 9 cross type AF points?
This kinda reminds me of Porsche lineup. You got 911 at the top, Boxter at the bottom and Cayman right smack in the middle. I've seen plenty of Boxters and 911 on the road but I don't think I've ever seen a Cayman before.
I can't help but think that if Canon puts the price of the 60D more than halfway between 550D/7D, people would just pick the 7D. Same thing if the price is less than halfway between the two, Canon might be killing the Rebel sales.

In combination with various other features, yes, it's enough to upgrade.

Well, $1300 was the price at which the 40D was announced - and look what happened to it three months later.
The D300 killed the $1300 price point for an xxD type of camera two years ago.
Now, in addition to the D300, there's the 7D.
The 7D will have rebates at some point, which will bring its price down to below $1500 (or even $1400).
This will be Canon's offer for those who do not want to spend $1700 but want better build quality and ergonomics than the Rebels.
