p.1 #1 · Been working on my Family PJ

I've been working to capture a lot of daily scenes that we take for granted. After reading through the FPJ blog, I've come to see the importance of capturing such moments and been working on it the past few weeks. As our family also includes 4 dogs (who are only about a half-step back from the kids in rank), there are a few Hundes in here too.

My crazy girl Banja, who has no wish to "do" anything with the cat, merely to stare at her, frozen like a pointer. Notice the head not on the ground.

My 21mos son working with his speech therapist. When he gets tired, he reverts back to the ASL that we've taught him. Stubborn little man, we knew his speech would come.....the doc wanted this, so we're following through.

Gift of Time

We think he has a TIA last week (ministroke). At 6wks shy of 14 years, he's about 110yrs for his breed (avg lifespan 8-10yrs). After heading to the vet with dread, thinking it was a one-way trip for Bort, I was soooo thankful that he was better by that afternoon, and made a point to capture something I frequently take for granted.

An oft-repeated scene when Daddy comes home from work, or trucks come up the driveway.

Mommy goes skating

A self-portrait shot via radio remote (camera on tripod, prefocused, f/22 .... was supposed to be a more blurred spin, but I couldn't get the SS down enough)

No rest for Mama

As soon as I set the tripod up for this daily pic shot, Banja (my insane working dog) assumed we were doing doggie shots and ran to get her favorite training tool (the Evil Cuz). Carpets vacuumed, dishes done, laundry finished, kids napping.........all Mama wanted to do was sit and read. But 'twas not to be, as the Cuz arrived on my keyboard and those brown eyes begged to go out in the 24F and play.

some fantastic shots, man

1. like the crop-also like that there's space to give the feeling of being alone

2. it's cute but without the explanation doesn't pull me in-i'm a speech pathologist myself, so i did wonder (before i saw your caption) if he was signing-glad he's getting help

3. love this shot-has a magical feel to it-love the colors

4. probably the best PJ shot of the set-great layering by shooting that oblique angle and including your daughter in the background

6. great shot, though there's a lot of unnecessary space at the bottom-as with #8 (the last shot), i'd suggest less ultrawide angles and getting a little closer to your subjects-wider isn't always better and in these cases, it would give the viewer a greater connection with the subject-getting closer to the subject gives the viewer a greater sense of "being there"-hope that makes sense-this shot captures a really great moment, just the same

7. like the concept-but for moving subjects, it's usually good to having them moving into the frame rather than out of it-definitely harder when it's a self portrait but that and a little less centered would be my recommendation for improvement

hope this is helpful and useful feedback

JRMagee, thank you.

Daniel, wonderful thoughts, I appreciate it! Prior to reading through your blog, I mainly shot 50-105mm around the house (full-frame body). I'm working on trying to move back to 24/28mm or 35mm to get more environment in my shots. B/c I don't have a 24mm, but rather Nikon's 14-24mm/2.8, I find myself using that zoom ring a bit much.

I appreciate your suggestions and will put them to work, hopefully this week during my 365 shooting!

I love most of these.

Oh, and radioblurs... with the name Gretchen (see her profile) and a self portrait with a female in it... I think "man" is a little off.

I like the style of all of these. Having said that, I think number 3 is fabulous for comp and colour, but I find myself wishing I could see his face, it would make the picture so much more interesting.

Love these. Especially the signing shot. I took many pictures of my daughter signing as an infant. She knew more than 100 signs by a year and it still comes in handy.

Window watcher is priceless with those toes up on the baseboard heater.

I kept reading the text and thinking it applied to the photo below (figuring it out just to forget again at the next shot)... which got really confusing when I read about the dog stroke. Glad your pup is hanging in there for now. Enjoy every minute with him.
