p.1 #1 · Nikon D3X: tethered live view options?

I have a D3x and am trying to figure out my various options for tethering with live view (i.e., getting the live view image to appear on the laptop screen while shooting tethered). I own Capture One 5.0 and Lightroom (2.0, I think). I have shot tethered before with a Phase One back and C1, but now I'm trying not just to shoot tethered, but to have a tethered live view image displayed on screen.

As far as I can tell, while C1 supports tethering with the D3x (i.e., being able to shoot with the camera connected to the computer and have the image transfered to the computer and viewable after it's shot) it doesn't support tethered live view as far as I can tell, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

So I downloaded a trial of Nikon's Camera Control 2, which does allow for tethered live view -- I can see the live view image from the camera on my laptop screen and focus it, change exposure, etc. Which is great, except for the fact that I only really need this capability for a couple of upcoming still life projects, which is not what I normally shoot, meaning it's not really worth it to me to pay $180 for Camera Control 2.

So are there any other less expensive software options for tethered live view with the D3x?

Thanks!

Sofortbild is a Mac application that does tethering but I don't know if you can use it in LiveView.
Since it's free you can find out for yourself, I'm downloading it right now

Thanks, but that program (at least from my quick research) doesn't support live view. So as far as I can tell, it wouldn't allow me to do anything different than I can already do using C1. But thanks.

You're right William, just tested on my D3: no LiveView tethering.

You can't even engage LiveView when the camera is tethered.

It's a nice program giving it is free, but it won't solve your problem. I guess Camera Control is the only way to go...

Unfortunately, I don't have an external monitor that I can connect to via HDMI.

I'm curious, what do you want to use live view tethering for?

I want to use it to be able to frame, compose, and focus for still life shooting without having to crouch down to see the LCD screen on the back of the camera. Also, I've found that I'm not very good at live view focusing using the on-camera LCD, so doing it tethered will give me a larger (live) view, which I can then zoom in on. (I know I can zoom on the LCD as well)
