p.1 #1 · Tokina 35mm F2.8 Macro DX

These are some test shots with the Tokina 35mm F2.8 Macro DX on a 7D

I like this little lens

-- lens is small and light
-- focus has been accurate and is fairly quick
-- has built in lens hood
-- colors and contrast have been good
-- lens is sharp wide open at F2.8

90% of my pictures are with this lens.

It works great on a 1d too btw (1.3x crop, FF is pushing it too far)

It is the same as the pentax 35mm limited (and the tokina variant was my gateway drug back to canon from pentax)

I am not at my primary computer, but here is one shot I have from the lens.

This was taken on a 1ds mkI, yes, a FF camera (and yea it doesn't quite cut it, and yes there was lots of vignette correction, but still!)

It gets alot of attention on the pentax side of things.

Jack of all trades, perfect at nothing though.

I almost prefer the tokina version. Yes it is bigger and ugly as hell, but the focus limiter really comes in handy.

(ohh and the tokina version is $200 cheaper, even though it costs more to make due to the internal focusing motor as opposed to the screw drive pentax one)

Here is a review of the pentax version (optically the same)

Tokina has done nothing to promote this lens. Seems like they tried to hide its existance. It would be nice to see some major reviews, like on photoshop.

Thanks, I haven't heard much at all about this lens. Since (in my experience) the Canon 35F2 stinks so bad, maybe this is a good alternative at this focal length. I would use this for street photography and I do worry about the focus speed (this is something the lenstip review brings up)

Beautiful shots, BTW.

I've had two EF 35/2's and neither of them stunk at all... way nice really...

This lens looks nice to me... the Tokina Macros seem to have a very nice rendering.

With the 7D I have not had a problem with focus speed. It is not as quick as some of the Canon lenses with ring USM, but has been fast enough.

I tend to prefer the focus clutch mechanism Tokina used to switch to manual. It makes macro focusing easy when on a tripod.

I have had one situation where the focus was too slow...

A bmx biker jumping up on a railing coming directly at me. Then again, for me to expect a macro to keep up with a 20mph rider coming head on was a bit stupid (on a 1d mkII at night)

I just picked up this lens locally on CL for 200 bucks in mint condition. I was looking for a 35mm f/2 as a normal lens on my 40d. I saw this one and went for it. I don't shoot dedicated macro, but I do buy and sell a lot of things (lot of lenses actually) and getting close to the detail there can be tough. This takes care of several needs. I imagine it will be on my camera most of the time.

Quite a surprising example of macro lens usage. I like the shot a lot.
