SO i am looking to pick up a new prime. I already have the Nikon 50mm f1.4 but looking something wider.
Anyone have experience with either lens for weddings? hows the sharpness/contrast...how is it wide open? hows the bokeh? I would love to see some WEDDING samples. Thanks.
I had the Sigma 30 1.4, but after 3 bad copies I traded it up for the Nikon 35. It just wouldn't nail focus, even in decent lighting. The Nikon has great image quality but the Sigma had better Bokeh. Sharpness wise I can't really comment, because my Sigma was consistently out of focus. The Nikon nailed focus right out of the box and hasn't let me down yet.
The Nikon is dependable and is a "win" no matter what. Here is a recent image from the Nikon 35, although it is not Wide Open, it is at f2.5
I will be interested to see any other photos you might have with this lens. I just bought one from B&H and am waiting for it to arrive on Tuesday. I too am a slave to my 50mm but was looking for something wider...
I had the Sigma lens & used it very little. My copy had a real hard time focusing in low light or backlit lighting. After missing a few shots because of the focus, I bought the 35 & haven't looked back. My experience (minus trading it in 3x) was about the same as JHerr.
I had some focus issues with mine, too. Not that backlit situations are exactly optimal for good focus, but the Sigma seemed to miss a bit, even once it locked on. Otherwise IQ and build were really nice. Once I got the 24L, it never left the bag.
alrighty thanks for all your comments. i think i will get the 35 f1.8. first of all, i cannot get over the fact that the sigma one is almost twice as much as the nikon.
i did my research and i found out the sigma one is only good if you get an excellent copy.
i would also like to see more wedding samples shot at f1.8 or f2 with the nikon 35mm
looking at shots from an e-sesh yesterday in lightroom, I found that my 30mm wasn't nailing focus, great smooth bokeh, but yeah............ :-/ i'm disappointed
