p.1 #1 · How to transport a large backdrop?

I am considering using a large-ish backdrop on some location shooting, 10 X 10 0r ideally even 20 X 10, but I can't figure out how to transport it.

My truck bed is only 6'.

How the heck do you deal with this? If I fold it up, not only will it be a pain to assemble & keep clean, but it will get wrinkles & seams, no? I can't imagine carrying a portable steamer with me, nor what repeated use of one might do to a painted muslin.

So how do you do it?

Are some materials less prone to getting seams than others?

Is there a special trick way of folding them?

-------

Alternately, Is it possible to use two separate sheets, picking just the right pattern or color, or material, or.... and hide the center overlap?

You can't carry a 20x10 around, really.

Depending on what, time-wise, you need them for,
it makes more sense to either rent locally, at your destination,
or fedex yours over, then fedex them back home, when done.

BTW, muslin is quite ok to have some wrinkles. you keep it out of focus, anyway.
But it's mostly the seamless ones, you don't want any dents, as you don't want
parasite shadows. I use the original carton tubing for transporting my 10x20's.

Thanks.

I've done more research, and this jives with what some others have said. With muslin, they just pile it into a laundry bag. That way, it wrinkles, but wrinkles evenly, and they make sure to have enough distance behind the subject.

I guess that will work for me, with a 10'. For wider, maybe I can make a non-straight edge, and hope that this will hide the overlap when OOF.

I routinely travel the country with 15'X20' backdrops and even 20'X20' backdrops from www.superlitebackdrops.com . Diane has a great product and will custom make just about anything for you. The basic backdrop material is Tyvek which does not show wrinkles like muslin does.

Yeah, people say that, but it doesn't work for me, and apparently not even the distance afforded by a 10x25 muslin is sufficient. I use A-clamps to stretch the muslin fairly taut between the uprights.

I have 10x20 hand painted muslins rolled up like a carpet then folded in half. Fit easily even in small car. No laundry bag thing, too many wrinkes that way. My way at worst I will get a crease in the middle but do like RDKirk mentioned (A clamps) and it is not a problem.

try transporting 9' seamless, haha.

my video guys just put their white and greenscreen sheets in a duffle. light it right and the wrinkles wont show up as much. just give a generous amount of space between subject and bg.
