Painterly effect is better with sharper disc edges and onion rings (plus high saturation), to achieve more visible paint strokes= overcorrected lens plus busy background. Zeiss to me looks like watercolor/pastel in most cases and Leica more like oil, (purely subjective, but painterly effect is there).

Retina doesn't care, only users that use vintage HD resolution will tell the difference. I've read that even mobile phones will have 4K resolution in near future.. and high pixel pitch.

Sigma - crazy sharp, but lacks some colors zeiss has. Subtle but noticeable. Double bokeh distracting.. its a mutant, partly canon partly zeiss, half sigma.. but its not zeiss. very fine lens but not "autofocus zeiss" .
