@makten: very painterly bokeh - I like this composition a lot!
Thanks Ulff! Yes, the bokeh makes the shot. And interestingly enough, this is what would normally be regarded as "bad" bokeh. A Sigma 50/1.4 had just ruined the shot with total smearing of the background.
Sharpness at pixel-level is close to zero. Lots of spherical aberration, haze and blur. But it still works.
Joakim - two great shots with the 28, the second one has a big impact and I like the way there is plenty of texture and detail on the wood at the top of the shot even though it was shot directly at the sun.
Makten, that must be some of the best looking bad bokeh I've seen! It would be truly awful if used as a regular background but it really works well in this case.
I went to Ringling Brothers Circus this sunday. One shot from the top row.
Zeiss 35mm f/2 @ f/5, 1/40, ISO 3200, 5d II, Cropped a little to remove part of foreground.
My wife said, wow such nice depth in the picture. I know she meant that it looks 3D. Haa haa. Looks like 21mm is gonna be on the way soon...
Meant to post this one a while ago....pretty sure I didn't, but since I am too lazy to go check all 81 pages of this thread, I'll apologize in advance if it is a repost...

Pretty amazing shot. There may be sharper 35's, but boy, I haven't ever seen better presence or 3D. And sharp enough for me, for sure. f/2 to boot.
I am sorry for little confusion, This picture is at f/5. I meant f/2 as part of the lens description.
I agree on sharpness. I was alluding to Edward's first impressions thread. I think the lens is as amazing as the 21 in different ways, just as the 100 is amazing in different ways. Just an awesome lens that really is not all that expensive.
f/5, makes sense, although I might have used a lower ISO and taken it at f/3.5 or f/4 considering the DOF for the 35. It is a testament to the 5DII that we can get away with 3200 ISO. Maybe you were right to do f/5. It turned out quite nicely.

The most interesting thing is that the Planar has a very smooth bokeh at larger distances, even wide open! Most 50 mm lenses does the opposite. This is why the Planar often is said to give ugly bokeh. It's just not made for closeups.

And now something completely different... The 100/2 Makro-Planar!
