I can't find much use for Makro-Planar 2/50, it's vignetting (and relevant bokeh issues) and corner smearing prevents it's usage at long distances - for macro I typically prefer 2/100, and close-ups I prefer Planar 1,4/50. Well maybe one day I figure some use for the 2/50 as well... Notice that this is just my personal point of view, I don't mind if somebody likes 50mm Makro-Planar, just that I don't and I have both lenses and have shoot with both of them quite a lot.
The focus shift of the Planar is few millimeters or centimeters, depends on shooting distance and aperture used for shooting. I don't mind the focus shift, my shooting technique mitigates focus shift: I almost always shoot in M and I keep Av set to f/2.8 --> I use Av for focusing if I shoot f/3.2-f/16, otherwise I focus at shooting aperture in M. Part of my shooting technique is to always shoot with live view (I use LCDVF most of the time, so I can do handheld shooting as well). But depending your equipment and your shooting technique the focus shift can be problematic.
FYI - even if you don't care focus shift, try focusing @ f/2.8, it's about 100000000x times easier due to better contrast (applies to majority of lenses, not just 1,4/50, specially 1,4/35 is much easier to focus f/2 and f/2.8 than it's f/1,4).
------------------------------
I was shooting on Scotland from 13th to 19th July. Instead trying to see whole country in one week, like I usually have done on my holidays, I was almost whole time in Isle of Skye - much better strategy and less time wasted driving car and more time spent outdoors. I had with me ZE lenses 21, 25, 35(1,4 version), 50 (1,4 version) and 100, and Leica 180/2,8APO. Over the years my shooting style has changed quite a lot - now I mostly know what I want and how to shoot it, so I don't shoot as many frames as I used to. I was originally really scared will my 6 5DmkII batteries last and will the 4x 32GB cards be enough - now after the trip I can only laugh; at any day I didn't need to change battery to either of the 5DmkII bodies and neither I filled the even the first cards inserted cameras at home...
Some statistics, number in ()-brackets is total number of shot and number in []-brackets is the real number of photos, meaning that when HDR images and panoramas have been combined so that instead of 3 bracketed shot only 1 is counted, since the 3 exposures were shoot in order to generate one HDR-image. In addition to panoramas and HDRs I counted 6 photos off since they were focused wrong or had vibration due to too slow shutter speed.
21mm: (0) [0] yes zero images with 21...
25mm: (263) [149]
35mm: (74) [46]
50mm: (682) [631]
100mm: (273) [233]
180mm: (204) [181]
Some ZE-shots from Scotland trip 1st day (haven't processed other days yet, just imported photos to Aperture). Had most of the time Distagon 1,4/35 and Leica 180 APO in cameras, but later in evening changed to Leica to Makro-Planar 2/100.
