charles.K what can you tell me from the 85/1.4? I need a lens with a big aperture for indoor portraits.
Since you have 85L and 85 ZE which one do you recommend?
Mast3rChi3f... The 85L and the ZE85/1.4 are both excellent lenses. Having used the L series lenses, I have been looking for a rendering of images that represent more of what I see without the PP. The ZE range are brilliant in that respect.
Wide open, the 85L at f1.2 to f1.8 is a great lens. The ZE85/1.4 wide open, is not as good as the 85L. But at f2 and above, I prefer the ZE 85/1.4 .
I am sure opinions would be very divided, as it comes down the style of image you wish to present.
The 85L II is one of the best Canon lenses, along side with the 135L. The 85L has very good AF, but slower, than the fast and accurate AF of the 135L.
Thanks charles.K.
In that case i think the best option is the 85L, because i already have the MP100/2.0, that is very sharp wide open. Just need a sharp lens (wide open f/1.2 or f/1.4).
charles, very nice! i hvaent gotten any other 85mm lens since i have hte 85L also but i havent used it much lately since i prefer the 100/2 CY at the moment. sweet lens .. those 35/2 shots are killing me though. must stop looking lol
edit: well 35/2 dreams just faded .. gotta spend $1300 to fix a/c unit in the house lol

IMO, Contax N 85/1.4 is one of the best, if the not the best portrait Zeiss 85.
Sharp wide open and excellent soft bokeh, much better/smoother than normal planar bokeh.
Plus the AF is excellent.
Rokinon/Samyang 85/1.4 is also sharp wide open and is another good alternative.
Mast3rChi3f... Great combo 85L and the ZE 100MP
teh_rebel. Thanks. The ZE 100MP is a great lens, as I imagine the 100/2 CY is too.
wayne seltzer... Would be great to try out the contax N 85/1.4
^ love that shot of the sandals... the lighting is perfect. Great shots guys.
Just a question for you 100mm MP and C/Y 100mm users... Which one do you find to be able to produce better IQ? I am looking for a portrait/macro user.. I understand that the C/Y isn't meant for Macro but does it do a bad job at it?

MFD of the C/Y Planar 100/2 is about 1m so it really doesn't get into macro territory without tubes. I tried mine a couple of times with tubes and found the results to be OK, but it's much less convenient than a true macro lens. I've never tried the 100/2 MP so I can't really compare directly.
Some great shots rsolti13
As a portrait/macro user the ZE 100MP is an exceptional lens. The only downside is the bokeh, can be busy under certain conditions for portraits. I personally like the bokeh, but this is just my perspective.
Just picked up the 85 1.4 ZE, so far not so good.
I haven't really had time to take it out of the house, but on first impressions I must say the 100 MP ZE blows it out of the water on sharpness wide open.. I think the 85 needs to hit about 3.5 before the sharpness it there. Though again my initial response to using the lens in the house. The bokeh is pretty decent and creamy, and I will do some more testing this week, but again I'm not so convinced it can beat out the 100 MP ZE, I'd say right now it's not even as good as my 85L mind you I had a sharp copy of that lens. Though again haven't seen any of the good zeiss qualities, since I haven't been outdoors with it.
I don't think that the 85 is as sharp as the 100MP wide open, meaning f:1.4 Vs f:2.0. Ultimate sharpness wide open or very close up is not what the 85 is bout IMHO. It has more to do with exceptional elegance and class of its drawing style. Somewhat like the difference between 50 f:1.4 Vs 50MP. That is probably why Zeiss feel they need 4 lenses rather than 2...
And I am cool with the fact that others, including talented shooters, feel otherwise..
I suppose time will tell, but right now I really don't see the need for both lenses. As the 85 doesn't even get as sharp as the 100 MP at f/2.... I may change my views on the lens in a few days time when I've had a chance to use it extensively. Hopefully I'll be out and about with it on Saturday if the weather is good. I have shoots the rest of the week, so chances are I won't get much of a chance to use it till the weekend.
And yes, the drawing style may be there, time will tell on that one, but the colors and 3Dness isn't apparent like it is on the 100 MP
