For those who have the 35ZE on a crop body, does it seem to suffice as a walk around for 75% of the time?
Thanks

Steph, as Adam wrote, your two Zeiss options are ZE 35 and ZE 28. Both are quality lenses, though 35 is usually considered a bit better. The main difference will be your shooting style for walkabout. The 35 will be an equivalent 56mm on FF, and 28 will be 45mm. They are physically pretty much the same package, and cost is close, so that shouldn't be the deciding factor.
However, that does not solve your issue with the 17-40L. That lens is not soft in the center, so, if yours is, you need to find out why (bad copy, user error, or whatever). Because the switch to a Tamron is not going to deliver significantly better center sharpness. One way is to compare 17-40 @ 50mm with your 50 f:1.4, oth at f:5.6, on a tripod. That would let you write off the Canon zoom with a fait bit of confidence that you are not going to waste money of getting rid of it.
As to your other options, if you need an unobtrusive lens, you might consider reversing your options: buy a Contax/Zeiss 35-70 f:3.4 zoom. It is manual only, but small, stealthy, and with excellent, typically Zeiss IQ. You can find them for around 400-500$ including adapter, and they also do macro to boost, so they are the best approach for a walk-about unobtrusive lens, if 35mm is wide enough for you on crop.
Then, if you need a wider AF lens than your 50mm, you can buy the 35mm Canon f:2.0, which is very small and light, not expensive, and delivers seriously good IQ for the miney (though not Zeiss obviously). An AF alternative to the Canon would be the Sigma 30mm f:1.4.
Hope this helps, and have fun!
