My question was in reference to the 35f1.4 ZE and the 35f1.4 C/Y Does the newer ZE version still produce similar 3D effect despite the smoother bokeh?

IMHO that the C/Y 35/1.4 generates 3-d better and more often than the new ZE 35/1.4 due to the under-corrected spherical aberration design of the new ZE 35/1.4 which has a slight haze affect due to the r,g,b colors not coming to focus in the same plane at apertures wider than 2.8. The focus falloff rate is also slower with the new one on purpose due to the under-corrected SA design so that portraits would not have a sharp quick in focus to out of focus transition like the C/Y 35/1.4 and 100/2 P and 100MP. This makes the lens require more subject background distance to isolate compared to the C/Y 35/1.4. With the C/Y 35/1.4 you can stop down like with the 50/1.4 and still get nice 3-d because the focus falls off faster and the bokeh is less strongly drawn compared to the ZE 35/1.4 when stopped down.
This of course depends on your definition of 3-d of which I require proper uniform sharpness around the whole object and separation with the background or other objects in front or back which are rendered in a non-blurred, softer drawn detailed way if possible. Just my $0.02.
I have ZF35/2, C/Y 35/1.4, and shot with Ajay's ZE 35/1.4.
I'm still exploring with the 1.4 but I like the rendering and micro contest very much. At f/2, the vignetting is more subtle than the f/2 version and maybe that's expected. I fell in love with the lens when I met Philippe in Paris and he let me try out his. When I returned, it was only a matter of time! ;-)
The ZE35/1.4 is a beautiful lens and I would like to get one sometime but am saving up for a 1ds4 which I hope will be announced soon in October as rumored.
@Jim, Thanks! I found the Zeiss white paper on "Bokeh" to be a very interesting and informative read which explains the behavior/rendering of the new ZE 35/1.4 at wide apertures.
Bob - thanks for your insight. I have been very curious about this lens, but it will take a while before I get serious.
Jim - Very nice shot with 35. Great comp. Did you correct distortion or it is uncorrected. I tend to feel Z 35/f2 's barrel distortion, but your shot does not show any to my eyes.
akul,
thanks.Yes i did correct it in PTLens, i am on the same page with you, it does have some barrel distortion that can be a bit frustrating at times.

Jim - I agree with you on the frustration on ZF 35 f2's distortion. Looking at your pic, I was wondering ZE has better optics, but mystery solved. As far as I can see from shots on this thread, ZF 1.4 seems to show much less distortion, that was the first thing I noticed. ( Ha ha, not the bokeh, but the distortion )
Its been a while since I posted anything on this thread. A lot of wonderful shots and new names around.
Looks like there is a lot of discussion around the Zeiss 35/1.4. I'll post some shots with the lens. I've a ton of images that needs to be processed. Here's one for starters.
