Thanks Donat. It's funny, this is the first time I've gotten to go to my favorite place for waterfall photos since I got the 21mm ZE and the 35 ZE. I had picked up the EE-S screen and had been using it for a few months. Low and behold when I put my ND and polarizer on for the waterfall shots, I realized I could barely see anything through the viewfinder. My wife happened to come along this trip, so I didn't want to slow our hike down too much....so I just winged it. I could see the water....but not much else.

Guess I'm going to need to take another approach next time. :-)

Love the lighting in the reflection of the sky in the water on your shot. As with the one a few pages back.

Sorry, Philber, but I must respectfully disagree. This thread contains a lot of good examples of the performance of these lenses, but very few of them are excellent images, those last few included.

Thanks Philber. Especially coming from you. I have admired your skills through many threads.

However, I can agree with Jeffery to a large extent regarding my own images. I do not possess an artistic eye. My shots are mostly documentary, though I do try hard at times to capture beauty when I see it. When I look at the first shot here I hear the sound of the myriad of birds singing there love songs, threatening neighbors, fearing raptors, the raptors themselves, the ice melting, the waves agains the ice edges. The moonlight shot should include the sound of the Boreal Owl and the curious sounds of male Goosander. This adds something that other viewers do not experience.
However, again, if I really had truly artistic images I would not present them here on the gear forum but on the correct forum for landscapes or wildlife. But this is the gear forum, so I tried to present the strengths and weaknesses of the lens. The images of the pilot boat is perhaps no beauty, but despite the ugly light, just before a short snowstorm hit the other day, the 21mm Distagon managed to capture what was there with magnificent accuracy, be it orange, or all the coloured greys.

Samuli, I find your placement of focus somewhat disturbing, but it catches my eyes, it makes me smile. Could it be those magnificent French balls?

As it happens, Jeffrey, it is I who respectfully disagree. Shots 1 and 4 particularly inspire me. Now whether it is the suject, or what our Finnish colleague does with it, or the equipment, I could not say. But I can feel the almost instant turnaround from winter to spring, when the air is still definitely cold, yet something starts to sing. I would have loved to have made those shots...

Philber,

I am glad to hear that, and would never think of taking that pleasure away from you or anyone. Just so folks know why I may appear to be coming from a 'narrow minded' point of view, I've studied fine art photography for a very long time, and have made that the goal of my best work. Yeah, I've had a bunch of exhibits of my work and have received awards, blah blah blah, but still, my opinions of what are good photographs and what are snapshots are only my own. I fully respect other's opinions, and am glad that any image works well for any individual. However, I am guided by the general consensus of well known masters, many educators, and the art community that I know of. I like to think that one reason Fred Miranda selected me to moderate the Landscape Forum here. Hopefully, the work on my site will speak better of me.

Z250SA, thanks for the honest reply. Your work is fine, and I appreciate your participation here.

I think everyone is entitled to critiques, as I would like to think, we are continually improving our vision to see better, and improve our skills as photographers.

I do embrace critiques, and look forward to a ways of improving the art of photography.

I have found on some other forums, comments can be very negative, and are not helpful or supportive, and do not have the skill level seen here in the FM forums.

Jeffrey, my comment that I respectfully disagree with your own view of our friend's work was in no way intended to be negative, disparaging or challenging. Hence my use of the word "respectfully", meant in earnest and not derisively. I absolutely respect your talent, and salute your commitment to this site. In that light, I have looked again at the two shots that "speak to me". Despite what can be said about this aspect or that, it remains that there is something akin to the German "gestalt", or "soul" that transports me there as I view them. Guilty as charged, Your Honour!

Respectful honesty is the first step towards a better World. If I may stray away from the main focus of this thread, the fact that I at my level of photography, can discuss anything related, and get responses from a multitude of experiences, educational levels, full feathered pros, amateurs, views of opinion etc is a wonder by itself. I have learned massively from this site thanks to all, all, participants. From a professional point of view I do indeed understand your points in question. I´ve been into biology and environmental sciences at the highest possible level. I find it educative, relaxing and inspiring to participate as an ignorant happy amateur in a field I will never ever master. Life is never as interesting as in the steepest part of a learning curve. Without honest feedback, how could there be any progress. Look at the Canon forum. Use an L and you get massive applause. If you disagree you are asked to leave. Been there, did that, love this place.

Philber, I´m blushing. Thank you for your kind words!

Being able to accept critique is the first step to becoming a better image maker

This is first and foremost a gear forum so I would not come here expecting the most artistic of imagery. Occasionally there is some damn fine work shown but that is the exception rather than the rule.

Makten, you sure know how to show off that 35!

I think the cow pic is a supreme illustration of what the lens does best, and the landscape has that trademark zeiss clarity
