Got my ZE 100/2 MP today. With all the flowers in bloom, I could not resist trying a couple of shots on the way home from work and before I had to dash out to dinner. Had about 10 minutes in a neighbor's front yard..... Think I will like this lens

Thanks, John Black, for comparing Zeiss with Leica! I think it is like a good side note in this ZE thread. Both perform great, but I prefer Leica in these shots.

I like John Black's reviews.. And I would agree with you that the leica shots in this particular situation are better, but here is why:

The first ZE shot is good at showing you the lens is damn sharp wide open. But if I posted a photo of my fiancee like that, she'd shoot me, it's an unflattering angle and aside from showing us how sharp the lens is wide open, and how creamy the bokeh is, both front and back, it's not the best shot of his beautiful wife. So that kinda sticks with you. Lets compare it to the second leica shot, since it's a close up. Yes the second shot shows you how sharp the lens is, but it also shows you a great shot of his wife, with nice emotions attached to it, thus making the overall image more apealing, The background is slightly less shocking in the areas that you eyes hit first, thus giving you the feeling that the bokeh is more pleasing. So overall the shot is just a better capture if you compare the two like that.

Onto the second ZE photo, nice posed shot of his wife, she looks great, although she could have a slight bit more light on her face, reflector maybe IMO, but overall it's a great capture. The distance though is half body, and the lens is 100mm so you cannot see great detail in a websized print. So because you're comparing two photos, you rely on the image as a whole in this situation, and if you notice the tree in the background is pretty close, now the bokeh is nice, but it's not as velvety smooth as the first Leica shot, and thats simply because of the distance from her to the background (tree in this case). Now if we take a look at the first Leica shot, you'll notice she's much closer, and she's got a really beautiful expression. So you're first thoughts are natural beautiful. Then since she's closer, you can pick out very fine details in her sweater at websize. Now when you look at the overall package your stunned beacuse the background is so far away from her, it's creamy, and she really pops, I mean not to mention her pose is fantastic but yet oh so natural. The background is more even toned, and the color work better together, and art jarring, so they don't take away from her (the subject).

So you see, in all honesty, the reality is, the leica shots are just better executed. Now if the M9+75 APO gives John better shots because it complements his shooting style, then awesome.. I mean I loved my M8 for that very reason, but the camera had major problems, and I found the 5DII to be a much better camera as my walkaround/backup body. I'd love to get my hands on an M9+75 APO and 35lux, but I'm broke after buying up all these ZE lenses..

Anyway, the point is, real world testing has to many variables to really compare lenses based only on performance. But shooting brick walls won't make you a better photographer. So take in all that you see with a very analytical eye. Try to look at hundreds of shots from each lens, and in the end, think about what you like and don't like about the lens, including focal length minimum focusing distance, af/mf, the body it comes attached to, everything that would effect you in the heat of the moment, and once you've figured it out and are happy with the lens you picked up, a new lens will come out

I just figured I'd mention all this because I was having a debate with my friend last night about the 135L vs the 100 MP ZE, and although we both agree that in almost all aspects the 100 kills the 135L, that there are just some situations where it's better to get the shot in focus (as well as AF works), then to lose the shot because your spinning the focusing ring around.. So for his type of work, he uses the Canon AF system, and couldn't switch, but in my situation, I am free to switch, because the added hassle of MF won't be crucial to my type of work 90% of the time. In his defense he noted that half the shots that are taken, are processed to hell before the customer receives the images back (weddings/events). So whats the point of paying more and having no AF, when you're going to process the files anyway, that I can agree on for the most part as well. Though I wouldn't give up my 100 MP ZE.

John, great shots, I really do like your first Leica shot a whole heck of a lot, and your reviews are great, they're what first got me interested in the ZE system..

Wow long post sorry guys, I'm bored as it's good friday and nothing's open.

As somebody else said in another thread, the light was great, so even a cell phone camera could have taken a good picture that afternoon. Picking between the 75 APO & 100 ZE is kind of a joke since both lenses are sharp, have great bokeh, etc., etc., etc. The difference(s) is really the composition, pose, etc. I'm leaning towards the 75 APO these days, but I think the 100/2 would be a better 3/4 length or full length portrait lens (assuming there's enough working distance). The 75 APO seems better suited for close-in shooting, but there is a

Adam - no worries Testing lenses in the real world on portraits is just about impossible. People move, light changes, compositions change. I agree, in this particular case the Leica got better shots - mostly because I started with the 1Ds3, then switched to the M9. So by the time the M9 got its turn, I had already figured out the angle i wanted. I purposely kept the "shoot" very short - about 5 minute with each camera. I didn't want to take 50 images with each camera and then pick the best of the best of the best. Each camera got 10 shots. And no reflectors - I only wish I had somebody to assist Wedding photographers take a lot pictures there and they have their assistants rushing all around. I'm always thinking, "Pssst - hey buddy, could shine some of that light my way!"

Whether I shoot with the 1Ds3 or M9, I really don't care. The only thing I like much more about the M9 is its size. And it is amazing such good quality can be packed into such a small package. And as noted, the 100 ZE is brutally sharp. It's sharp wide open, it's sharp stopped down. The 75 APO is really sharp as well, but the 100/2 has a slight edge wide open. What surprising to me is how similar the two lenses can render. The 100 ZE might have more of 3D feel to it, but to be honest, I think the Contax 100's had more 3D feel than the ZE. Maybe the right day, under the right light I'll change my mind on that. Time will tell.

This should be easier to compare:

The expression in the 2nd shot is much better, but at least the scene, etc., is very similar. This is about as apples to apples as it's going to get.

And as I saw in a comparison I posted on another thread, Zeiss are warmer and Leica cooler. In this case, bokeh is good for both but I'd give a slight edge to the Leica.

Great shots and thanks for the comparison John. I prefer the first portrait, as it has a better feel for a portrait, even though the sharpness with ZE 100MP can be brutally honest. It just has more of a feel. This in part could be attributed to the system, of the 1Ds combined with 100MP, which may be somewhat different again to a 5DII combined with 100MP, as compare to the M9 as a system.

It is not often you get a side by side comparison like you have presented.

Ajay: Good shot.

Philber: Great shot, it comes alive with ZE 35.

Another thanks here, John Black. I was smitten by the Leica but seeing how the Makro Planar renders, I'm reinterested in that lens now But as you stated in your former post, the lighting that day definitely must have been magical. The background is perfectly illuminated.

Your images just now didn't show up... Still now showing up.

But yeah, your review on the 100 CY made me want one, but I couldn't find one locally, so when I heard about the 100 MP ZE, I jumped on it, as I really had having to adjust the aperture ring myself, I rather then camera do it for me.
I totally agree with what you wrote, and YES I would love it if an assistant followed me around all day, but that NEVER happens! Even when I hire one, sometimes they don't show up!

We haven't been seeing a lot of portraiture with the 35, so thought I would contribute a couple. I just keep liking this lens more and more. These are both wide open, but the shutter speed was slow in evening light.

Thanks Charles. Your cat shot is striking.

Borrowlenses.com has all the ZE's available to rent now, so I am really looking forward to checking out the 85. I'd really like to try the 100 as well. There's been some talk here that it is not optimized for close in/wide open, but I have seen some shots on flickr that look really nice. Totally different than the 85L, but I think a little more realistic and more to my liking.
