Thank you all, guys, for your comments, shared experience and advices.
I could decide to acquire a Voight 50/1.2 E instead but not sure as 50P has a special look wide open and a strong 3D feeling when stopped down a bit.
Considering a7R3 or a73 I choose the former because of its ability to crop heavily that may be very helpful with my travel lens set-up of 16-35/4 L and *to be acquired* Tamron 70-180.

I used to have 50P for a month and loved it except it is manual. With classic 5D it was hit-or-miss to get focus nailed. With MILC camera I hope to re-evaluate this lens.

Did you buy a new or used 50P? You claim you didn't notice focus shift with your new 50P so it is interesting to know if it is a new design quietly made by Zeiss or a sample-to-sample variation issue.
ZE28/2 is known to have strong 3D rendering as well yet it is not a very famous lens.

I think all MILC cameras are equally vulnerable to sensor dust issue. Hopefully I do not change lenses a lot in non-controlled environment and moreover I prefer to use 2 cameras set-up when travelling to minimize lens changes.
Sorry Alex -- I overlooked your question about whether I bought the ZE 50/1.4 new, or used. I bought the lens used, here on the B&S board. After the failure of my first purchase (years ago) due to focus shift on Canon DSLRs, I was reluctant, but still hopeful. Fortunately, the purchase paid off and I'm extremely happy with the "new" used lens. It is definitely one of my favorite 50mm lenses. I really need to do a comparison between it and the Loxia 50 to see which I prefer. I wish I shot more often with the 50mm focal length, but tend toward moderate-to-strong wide angle (20-35mm).
I'd love to get one of these amazing Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4 lenses but there are quite a few choices and I'm confused. Does anyone have advice on which one would be best on Sony A7-series? There's the older Carl Zeiss Contax-Yashica (from which I've seen some stunning photos), the more recent ZE/ZF models for Canon and Nikon, and the ZM mount for Leica (I know about the issues there on Sony), and probably others I'm not aware of or not especially interested in (e.g., the Sony Zeiss versions). Are there differences in optical and build quality across these lenses?

Personally, I would get the Sony/Zeiss AF version. I think this has the best control of flare and reduced contrast at large apertures, other than the newest offerings from Sony and Sigma 35mm f/1.2-1.4 lenses.
For an MF lens, I would get the ZE version and adapt to either Sony E and/or Canon RF mount.

Cool, thank you! I actually already have a Nikon F/G adapter for Sony so I'd go for the ZF version. The Contax-Yashica one still appeals to me, but it's remarkably expensive (more than the ZE/ZF but not the ZM) and it seems hard to find one in good condition with no scratches on the glass or other problems with the optics.

I prefer the ZF.2 with exif and lens data, if you can find one. ZF is same lens design (perhaps ZF.2 has better/different lens coating, but otherwise, the optics are the same). Good luck on your search!
The Milvus 35/1.4 is large, but has absolutely gorgeous rendering — even in the company of great 35s like the c/y, zf, zm, or the 35/1.2s from CV and Sigma.

After a few months of dithering between the older Contax-Yashica Distagon 35/1.4 and the newer-but-not-so-new Distagon T* 35/1.4 ZF, I spotted a decent deal on a ZF a couple of months ago and finally received it today after shipping delays. The C/Y still appeals to me, but based on first shots with the ZF I'll be happy with it for a long time, plus I can use it on my cinema camera (which has a Nikon-mount speedbooster adapter). The flimsy lens cap has to go, though!
