p.1 #1 · Canon Lens hood for MPE-65 lens available

FYI - I just noticed that the normally scarce Canon Lens hood for their MPE-65 macro lens is available at bhphotovideo.com. The URL is below:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/239657-REG/Canon_3431B001_MP_E_65_Lens_Hood.html

I haven't tried this item and thus have no idea how effective it is, etc. I haven't looked for the lens hood at other vendors and don't know what its manufacturing status is, how long it may stay in stock, etc.

I hope this is of interest to others.

Thanks Phil!

IMHO if you use the MT-24EX then it's a really good idea to pick up the lens hood -prevents lens flare from the flash.

Thanks for your comments on this topic - I've just ordered the Canon lens hood as it's become a bit too obvious that I occasionally have a flare problem using the MT-24 + Fong Puffer diffusers with my MPE-65 lens, especially at 4 or 5x magnification.

In looking at how the MT-24 sits with the flash heads adjusted inwards, towards the lens central axis, as you recommend at high mags, it seems to me that some of the flash light could enter the lens without a hood. I hope to get the energy to do some side-by-side flare tests with and without the lens hood soon. Perhaps the flash heads without a diffuser wouldn't have this problem, but then as we all know, the light will be unbearably harsh.

I wonder if better flare management is a part of your flash rig, as shown on your November 3, 2009 blog? Perhaps light spilling out the bottom of my unmodified Fong Puffers is a flare risk without your mods? Just a thought. It's confusing that AFAIK, several other good macro photographers using the MT-24 + Fong Puffer system don't seem to need more than a basic setup, without such mods. Maybe they are using the Canon lens hood, which has been impossible to find until recently

The reflector material that I use just forces more light out the front of the diffuser -plus that reflected light adds to the overall diffusion of the light. What will possibly give you glare is pointing the flash heads all the way down toward the lens (necessary for 2x and higher shooting). Also if you use an extender you want the flash heads to be pointing straight down -if they point back toward the lens then that will cause flare as well, even with the lens hood.

Just started shooting with the lens hood for MP-E65, and it totally works awesome for 4-5X where flash flare always sucked. Thanks guys. Also did the puffer mod and have to still get out and shoot with it, but looks good.

Smart... very smart. The one thing that bugs me is that the lens hood doesn't have a cap, and I keep having to unscrew the darn thing. A spare lens cap would be so easy.

The lack of a lens cap is driving me bonkers, too...

Perhaps a soft/elastic lens cap would work? Here's an example:

I am sure I've seen a simpler, more flexible soft lens cap, with an elastic strand holding it on the lens, somewhere...

Good idea - you know it would be easy enough to do on the sewing machine with some nylon fabric. Just need to find the time.

I've found a solution for the above issue.

After some deft measuring of the lens hood's inside diameter (34mm), I recently ordered a $5 generic lens hood on eBay, which fits perfectly and has solved this tiny but most annoying idiosyncrasy...

Link to where the lens cap can be found on eBay...

See pictures below... (sorry, a bit more depth of field would have helped in the first picture)

Why make it easy when you can make it difficult.
My solution (a prototype I will enhance this winter)

Ha ha! So, are those LEDs built into the lens hood, to allow easier focusing of the subject?
