p.1 #1 · What times do eagles feed?

The water is starting to freeze up here in Wisconsin, and there are a few places nearby with lots of bald eagle activity. I've went looking for eagles in the past, but always seem to arrive at the wrong time.

What's the best time of day to observe bald eagles fishing?

Whenever they're hungry. In my experiences, I've found them eager to feed at first light in the morning. Sometimes, when the food supply is good and they're crops are full, they may sleep-in in the morning and get more active in the late morning.

Chris, like most birds they will feed first thing in the morning and late afternoon. But when the weather is this cold, they will try and eat more often to keep their weight and body temps up. So in answer to your question, there is not set time for them to feed during the winter, it is whenever they need to. Best times to photograph though still remain early morning and late afternoon.

In my experience Eagle feed at intervals, depending on the temperature. The colder it is, the more frequent the feeding. I'd say the average in winter is every 20 to 40 minutes.

But that isn't carved in stone. I have seen them just sit for hours, laughing at the people with cameras

Hm, so if I show up at sunrise and just camp out, I should be in good shape, eh? I can observe from my car, so I can pretty much hang out all day if necessary. Sounds like I better bring a tripod in case they're out before the sun is over the trees.

Thanks for the tips guys. I hope to get some decent photos of them diving!
