p.3 #1 · What did the Alt-A-Claus bring you for Christmas?

UPS has my Contax 645 120 APO-Makro at their local warehouse, so I guess I'll have to wait until after the holiday weekend to test it out.

Panasonic Gf1 + 20/1.7 + C/Y-M43rd adapter...

(and an extra Panasonic Gf-1 body as an accidental purchase... oops!)

Oooohhhh, you can look forward to that one! I was out shooting with mine today, one of my very favorite lenses.

I bought more alt glass than I deserved throughout 2009, so no big splurges for the holidays. I did get a few books, though.

Couple Richard Avedon books:
Woman in the Mirror
In the American West

Landscape book:
Regarding the Land (Ketchum, commemorating work of Eliot Porter)

Working on buying a C/Y 25/2.8 from a fellow FM-er.

Alt-A-Claus (aka craigslist-a-claus)

On the first day of christmas I found 1 - telstar 400m f6.3 lens, On the second day ... 2 - developing tanks, On the third day ... 3 - boxes of photog gunk.

All for a grand total of $10.00.

Your Nikon 300/4.5 is defective. Mine is around the same serial number as yours, but performs like Jay's - no noticeable lateral CA. Looking at your 100% crops your lens is also lacking in sharpness. Mine is better than that with a 2x converter attached.

The ultimate Alt-gear: a Berlebach 3002 Report tripod.

As all other Berlebachs, it's solid ash. Nothing even approaches wood for vibration dampening. The 3002 goes to a full 60", so I can shoot anything I own standing up.

Rated 26.5-lb payload, but Berlebach rates them conservatively. The 3002 doesn't have any bells or whistles - no column, no leveling head, no built-in ballhead. For US shooters, only available from the Berlebach factory in Mulda, and with shipping, still under !70 Euros.

And, yes, it is gorgeous.

Hi David,

I have been wanting a Berlebach for awhile and will get one in the next couple of months. I am glad to hear someone else's experience with them is positive. I think I am getting one with a leveling head, however. Is there anyway to know what is available directly from the factory? I have only seen them at B & H and Adorama.

Check out the website, I found it with Google. Tons of tripods. I have the tabletop model and its steady and strong as an ox.

Got my first alt lens (Tamron's don't count, right?).
A beautiful Zeiss 35 ZE which is everything all the posts say it is.
Works perfectly with my new Canon 5D mk2.

I definitely have the Zeiss fever!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but if the 3002 is a full 60 inches that would be great. The website (thanks for pointing it out John) says it is only 54 inches. I think I am going to get the 3032 which is the 3002 with a level head and if it is a full 60 inches then that would seal the deal for me.

Summilux 80. My Summicron 90 needed a friend.

I like them both as if that was a surprise.

I am getting two new "alt" lenses, but still in process.

Zuiko f/2.8 135mm

I had sold my previous one and recently I looked with my wife at the images I have made with it. I instantly regretted and ordered another one on ebay. It is still on the way from Berlin (where my son lives) to my current residence in Guangzhou, China.

Rokinon f/1.4 85mm in Nikon mount.

A friend in the USA will buy it for me and bring it over to the Philippines in February 2010, where we will meet. It will be attached to my Canon 5D via an AF-confirm adapter which I already own.

Tremendous amount of green chromatic aberration on these. With this lens, it's almost as though any specular highlight will give me a ton of chromatic aberration.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if this is a sign of damage or normal functioning. .

That's normal. I have two versions of this lens, the Ai-s ED and the later AF ED MKIII. They both are green fringe beasties. In every other regard, they are astounding lenses, so I put up with it. Someday I'll buy a Mamiya APO. Maybe next Xmas. sigh ......

Is that the 90 APO? That would be a sweet portrait combination, enjoy!

Why not the EF version of the Rokinon? Are they sold out of them?

What I read they do not come with an AF-confirm chip.

I have one Nikkor to EOS AF/confirm chip, which I do not use.

Attached to the Rokinon it will give me AF/confirm function.

I remember I bought this adapter more than a year ago when I was planning to buy a Zeiss lens for may 5D, when they were not yet available in EF mount, but it was never realized.

Just glue that AF confirm chip onto the mount of the EF version.
That AF confirm chip is not special for Nikkor to EOS adapters only.
Just remove it from the adapter carefully.
I plan to chip my EF version Rokinon soon when I order some more confirm chips.
