In truth, another equal-sized chunk went to pay for Kindergarten for my daughter, and the rest, a chunk equal to the size of both the previous chunks, went to pay off debt...
Typical. You come into a little money and everybody has their hand out...

A Zeiss 50 1.4ZE just to look over the edge of the slope, but my feet seem to be moving closer toward the edge (100/2 macro when available in ZE mount).

I got myself a 180 f/2.8 ED (Ai-s) a month ago. I'm very happy with it thus far. Much moreso than with the 300 f/4.5 which is only so-so.
Which 300 do you have...? I hope it's not the 300 ED...because I have the earlier "H" version and though I have nothing but great success with IT (like the 180 P.C), ED lust always lurks and looms, and...
.....I always keep my eye out for the ED...
(Maybe I should just stay on my side of the greenery....)

Santa did not bring anything but just before christmas I got the franken-tilt, a Canon 50/2.5 macro, a Zenitar 16 fish, a Rollei Zeiss 35/1.4 and a Canon 1D so I am happy anyways.

My 300's main problems are the chromatic aberrations (green and red) and the softness wide open (probably spherical aberrations). I haven't had much of a chance to test the lens more fully closed down. Then again, for <$140, I can't complain too much, I suppose

I'm surprised you're not pleased...I think it's the same version I have (optically, not build-wise, mine being the older "H" black and silver...no rubber) and couldn't be happier....

More often than not, I can overlook lens defects, but the chromatic aberrations are quite strong throughout the frame. I'll post some examples later tonight when I get home.

Perhaps my red-green deficiency is a benefit after all....at least when it comes to CA....
Here's a shot taken with the 300 that I particularly like (considering that I didn't see the severed leg until I got home and got a good look....) http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/7483/peg2cu32.jpg
Tremendous amount of green chromatic aberration on these. With this lens, it's almost as though any specular highlight will give me a ton of chromatic aberration.
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if this is a sign of damage or normal functioning. Could there be a misaligned element in the lens? I still have another 30 days on the warranty so I could send it in for inspection or exchange.

OOOOWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww..........
As I said....I'm read-green color deficient...and it'd take a lot of oversaturation for CA to show up, but yours actually hurts....
I really think you should send that puppy to Nikon for inspection along with those pics...
...and I'm counting my blessings that my 300 hasn't displayed such CA (not yet, at least)...

Well, the warranty is through KEH. I'll give them a call tomorrow and ask about their warranty. If I have to send it in to Nikon, I'd be better off scrapping it and just buying a better 300mm lens.
