Try to find a second hand and sell it when a new FX arrives.
Exactly what I did with the D300. I have one D300, I'm settled in DX, and decided the features of the S aren't worth the extra bread to me. I bought a used D300 as a second body, figuring I'll sell it probably for a lot less of a loss when the D400 appears.
I bought the D300 literally the week before it was officially announced. I don't need any of the upgrades on the D300s, and I bought refurbed so saved $400 over the new cost. I can't complain.
Funny, but I always considered video to be nothing more than a novelty - even when using a dedicated video camera. I came to that conclusion after owning a Canon video camera that was actually quite good. It simply didn't get used that much so I gave it away to my parents who wanted one. (Now they never use it either.) I suppose some love it, but for me if it is a novelty in a dedicated camera it will definitely be a novelty in a DSLR.
However, it is kind of a cool novelty. I was at a concert a couple of days ago - David Cook at the Pechanga Casino in Temecula, CA - and someone next to me was using a P&S camera for its video capabilities, such as they were. Cute little videos. It wouldn't bother me to have that option, but it certainly isn't a deal breaker. Canon may have better video, but I really could care less. I still think Nikon has the edge for what I want in a camera.
I am interested in a D700 with the D3s chip, but I don't think I would pop for the upgrade. My cameras are already so far beyond my capabilities as a photographer that it doesn't matter. In a way, I wouldn't mind just getting into the FX game with a D700s. Dual card slots and better high ISO would be just fine with me.
But owning the D700 now, I just don't see me being able to justify the cost. However, if someone bought my D300 or D700 for enough to afford an "s" version by adding the cash from my recently sold D200, I'd be all over that!
I love the D700. If camera technology never made another advancement, I would not shed a tear. Even if a new revision or model comes out, the D700 is not going to plummet in value. So if you can use it now, buy it!
this is the most ridiculous statement I ever heard.
is that what happened to the 5D price when the 5D2 came out?
or isn't it just now hitting that price point?
1200 for a d700 in less than 12 months?! good luck.
$1600 for a used one... possibly

It will then no longer be the "hot camera" and suddenly it will be junk. I predict prices will fall to $1,200 by the end of the coming year. That sounds cheap and probably is, but remember there's still the price of the FX lenses for it. Lenses rarely drop very much in value. Good ones have been increasing in price. That's one of the reasons I have been concentrating on buying the very best lenses while going cheaper on cameras.
D700, regardless of what happens, won't drop below $1600 on the (hilarious) american used market for a long time.
Look at the Canon 5D. still going for way too much.
Much agreed. It will stay at least $1,800 or more for a long while. It is a very solidly built and versatile body, and its high ISO ability is excellent. Its full frame design will not become obsolete no matter how much time passes.
p.3 #10 · Any speculation of "D700S" release date?
I still see the D2hs for sale here for around $1,000, and the D2x for more than that. I have no idea if they actually sell for that or not. But that tells me the D700 won't get to $1,200 for a long time.
