p.10 #1 · Your Best Nightscapes and how they were made
This is my first real post here. I've been reading (lurking) for quite a few months now and decided that I wanted to be a contributor. Nothing quite as nice as what the rest of you have posted, but one of my more recent night shots.
I'm looking forward to interacting more! Thanks to the FM community!
Edit: Forgot to say how it was made...
Nikon D300s
f6.3 for 6 seconds at ISO 400
Light editing in Lightroom 2 for noise, contrast, and sharpness.
Foggy night provided nice backlight from the city.

This pic was taken at the Grand Canyon at about 1am. We had been driving for hours and were exhausted. Just wanted to set up our tent and go to bed. After seeing how this pic came up, suddenly I wasn't tired anymore...

We have an upcoming trip to Dallas (me and Powerphoto)... can anyone suggest directions to prime locations for nightscapes? PM me or PowerPhoto. No need to put it here. Keep the space for nice photos. Thanks all.

BennyR, those are some nice shots. I am always taking shots of downtown from the south looking north. I like the different view.
As for the last one, where was this taken, I am having a difficult time picturing it. Are you north east of downtown? And what is the freeway to the lower left? To me, that is a really cool shot.

It's taken from Mt Soledad Park. I wanted to time it to catch a couple of incoming and one outgoing flights from the Lindberg airport. Just havin' some fun.

This was taken with a 15mm Fisheye from the roof of the parking garage where the lights were set up. An NYPD friend of mine hooked us up and got us some sweet access!
I have some more I have to get off of a hard drive.. so stay tuned.
Cape May Light House, Cape May, NJ
10 minute exposure using Fujichrome 100 slide film, an elan 7e with Sigma 28-105 f2.8-4. I metered the light house and sky at at F2.8 to get my exposure then figured it out to F22 with reciprocity. The result was a 10 minute exposure. I did have to put my hand in front of the lens every time the light came so it didn't severely overexpose the film.
While rapping up shooting the sunset on to of the Blue Ridge Parkway out side Ashville, NC. I noticed a car coming down around the curve south of us. I set up the frame, metered the sky and figured the exposure for F11 to be 20 seconds or so. I just sat back and waited and caught this motorcycle out for an evening cruise.

I mostly shoot at night in winter, since nights are so long here. I still do a lot at night in summer too. I really like using a bunch of strobes to light stuff up but will take an ambient light shot when the opportunity presents. First used remote fired SB-28 flash to light up giant sequoia at Yosemite, second was spot lights used to illuninate mounting a propeller on a wind turbine near my home .
