A wonderful image. Fantastic detail everywhere. I love the almost monochrome colours and then that beautiful subtle red. Great.

Interesting light... but you have misidentified the location. You shot this from Olmsted point looking a bit more north than east I think. The lake is Tenaya Lake, not Tioga Lake. The peak getting the last sun is Mount Conness. The pass is another 20 miles up the road or so and cannot be seen from this location.

Hi Heath,

A nice looking shot. The High Sierra part of Yosemite sure is cool huh?

Very nice shot, Heath. Love the comp and clarity. And the pink on the far mtn is really sweet.
I wonder if the greens in the pines could be brought out a bit. They seem a little flat/grey to my eyes.

Thank you Barry,
When posted here it seemed to lose some color all the way around, I have this in a 13x19 print which shows very rich color in the trees even the bark on the print has better color, as well as the sky. Maybe because I printed from a TIFF and posted a compressed Jpeg here with it ?

Dan,
Thanks for proper ID , I did mean to say Tenaya Lake, and you are correct about being turned a little to the north sometimes you get a little turned around since I came in from the lee vining side , and yes the actuall " pass " is another 20 miles
but people around me call this " area" Tioga Pass untill you get closer to crane flat.

That could be it. It also appears you posted in Adobe RGB. Not converting to sRGB would do leave the colors flat, too.

I don't want to be overly pedantic - though I'll probably come across that way - but I've never heard anyone refer to this area as Tioga Pass. And I've been going there for a number of decades that you can count with the fingers on one hand, but just barely, if you get my drift. I also backpack and photograph there a lot.

People do refer to the general area as "Tioga Pass Road" perhaps, but that would encompass the entire stretch from the eastward turn back by the Tuolumne Grove to at least the pass (a 50 mile stretch) and possibly on down to Lee Vining. But from the location of the photograph you have perhaps a 40 minute drive to get to the pass itself, which is perhaps 20 miles away.

I can't think of another photograph of this scene that I've seen - and there are many! - that has identified it as Tioga Pass. The usual designation is "Tenaya Lake" or "Tenaya Lake from Olmsted Point" or similar. Here is a photo made near the actual pass.

All of that aside, I always love this scene and it is one that is certainly ripe for photography - I'm certain that whatever we call it we'll agree that it is a beautiful spot.
